Testing is an important part of JavaScript development.
It helps you check whether your code works as expected. It can also help you find bugs before users find them.
As an application grows, testing everything by hand becomes difficult. You may need to check the same features many times.
This is where automated testing helps.
Mocha is a popular tool for testing JavaScript code.
But what is Mocha? How does it work? And why do developers use it?
In this guide, you will learn the basics of Mocha. You will also learn how to install it and write your first test.
Let’s get started.
What Is Mocha?
Mocha is a JavaScript testing framework.
It helps developers write and run automated tests.
Mocha is often used with Node.js applications. However, it can also run tests in browser environments.
In simple terms, Mocha checks whether your code produces the expected result.
The process is simple:
Write code → Write a test → Run the test with Mocha → Check the result
If the result is correct, the test passes.
If the result is wrong, the test fails.
Why Is JavaScript Testing Important?
Code can break at any time.
For example, you may update a function to add a new feature. However, that change may break an older feature.
Testing helps you find these problems.
It can help you:
- Find bugs early
- Check your code
- Prevent broken features
- Make changes safely
- Reduce manual testing
- Improve code quality
Therefore, testing can save time as your project grows.
Why Use the Mocha JavaScript Testing Framework?
The Mocha JavaScript testing framework is popular because it is simple and flexible.
Mocha mainly focuses on running tests.
You can then choose other tools for assertions, mocking, and code coverage.
This gives you more control over your testing setup.
Some key benefits include:
- Easy-to-read test syntax
- Flexible setup
- Node.js support
- Browser support
- Async testing support
- Test hooks
- Support for different assertion libraries
As a result, Mocha can work well for many JavaScript projects.
How to Install Mocha
First, make sure Node.js is installed.
You can then install Mocha with npm.
Run:
npm install --save-dev mocha
Next, open your package.json file.
Add a test script:
{
"scripts": {
"test": "mocha"
}
}
Now you can run your tests.
Use:
npm test
Mocha will run your tests and show the results.
Your First Mocha Test
Let’s create a simple example.
First, create a file named:
math.js
Add this function:
function add(a, b) {
return a + b;
}
module.exports = add;
Next, create a test file.
For example:
math.test.js
Now write a test.
const assert = require("assert");
const add = require("./math");
describe("Math", () => {
it("should add two numbers", () => {
assert.strictEqual(add(2, 3), 5);
});
});
Now run:
npm test
Mocha will run the test.
The test passes if the result is 5.
How Does Mocha Syntax Work?
Mocha uses a simple structure.
A basic test looks like this:
describe("Group name", () => {
it("should do something", () => {
// Test code
});
});
The two main parts are describe() and it().
Let’s understand them.
What Is describe()?
The describe() function groups related tests.
For example:
describe("User functions", () => {
// Tests go here
});
You can think of describe() as a container.
It helps you organize your tests.
This becomes useful when your project has many test cases.
What Is it()?
The it() function creates one test.
For example:
it("should return true", () => {
// Test code
});
The text inside it() explains what you expect.
Try to write clear descriptions.
For example:
it("should return true for an active user", () => {
});
Clear test names make debugging easier.
How Do Assertions Work in Mocha?
Mocha runs your tests.
However, you also need to check the result.
For this, you can use assertions.
One simple option is Node.js’s built-in assert module.
const assert = require("assert");
You can then compare values.
For example:
assert.strictEqual(5, 5);
This checks whether both values are exactly the same.
If they match, the test passes.
If they do not match, the test fails.
Testing a Function With Mocha
Let’s test another function.
function isEven(number) {
return number % 2 === 0;
}
This function checks whether a number is even.
Now let’s test it.
const assert = require("assert");
describe("isEven", () => {
it("should return true for an even number", () => {
assert.strictEqual(isEven(4), true);
});
it("should return false for an odd number", () => {
assert.strictEqual(isEven(5), false);
});
});
Each test checks one result.
This is called unit testing.
What Is Unit Testing?
Unit testing means testing small parts of your code.
A unit can be:
- A function
- A method
- A module
- A class
For example:
function multiply(a, b) {
return a * b;
}
You can test it like this:
it("should multiply two numbers", () => {
assert.strictEqual(multiply(4, 5), 20);
});
The goal is simple.
Check whether one part of your code works correctly.
How to Group Tests in Mocha
You can use describe() to group tests.
You can also create groups inside other groups.
For example:
describe("Math", () => {
describe("Addition", () => {
it("should add numbers", () => {
assert.strictEqual(2 + 3, 5);
});
});
describe("Subtraction", () => {
it("should subtract numbers", () => {
assert.strictEqual(5 - 2, 3);
});
});
});
This keeps your test files organized.
It also makes large projects easier to manage.
What Are Mocha Hooks?
Mocha provides hooks.
Hooks run code at specific times.
The main hooks are:
before()after()beforeEach()afterEach()
They are useful for setup and cleanup.
before()
before() runs once before the tests.
before(() => {
console.log("Starting tests");
});
Use it for setup that should happen once.
after()
after() runs once after the tests.
after(() => {
console.log("Tests finished");
});
Use it for final cleanup.
beforeEach()
beforeEach() runs before every test.
let number;
beforeEach(() => {
number = 10;
});
it("should have the value 10", () => {
assert.strictEqual(number, 10);
});
This is useful when every test needs the same setup.
afterEach()
afterEach() runs after every test.
afterEach(() => {
console.log("Test finished");
});
You can use it to clean up after each test.
How to Test Async Code With Mocha
JavaScript often runs asynchronous tasks.
For example, your code may:
- Call an API
- Read a file
- Query a database
- Wait for a Promise
Mocha supports these tests.
You can use callbacks, Promises, or async/await.
Testing With done()
Mocha provides a done callback.
Call done() when your async task finishes.
it("should finish the task", (done) => {
setTimeout(() => {
assert.strictEqual(true, true);
done();
}, 1000);
});
Mocha waits until done() runs.
Testing With Promises
You can also return a Promise.
it("should return success", () => {
return Promise.resolve("Success")
.then((result) => {
assert.strictEqual(result, "Success");
});
});
Mocha waits for the Promise.
Testing With Async/Await
Many developers prefer async/await.
It is easy to read.
For example:
it("should return user data", async () => {
const user = await Promise.resolve({
name: "John"
});
assert.strictEqual(user.name, "John");
});
This is a common way to test modern JavaScript code.
How to Test Errors With Mocha
You should also test error cases.
For example, look at this function:
function divide(a, b) {
if (b === 0) {
throw new Error("Cannot divide by zero");
}
return a / b;
}
The function throws an error when b is zero.
You can test that error.
it("should throw an error for zero", () => {
assert.throws(() => {
divide(10, 0);
});
});
Testing errors is important.
It helps you check how your code handles bad input.
Which Assertion Libraries Can You Use With Mocha?
Mocha does not force you to use one assertion library.
You can choose the one you prefer.
Common options include:
- Node.js Assert
- Chai
- Should.js
Each library has a different style.
Therefore, developers can choose the style that works best for them.
How Does Mocking Work With Mocha?
Mocha does not include a full mocking system.
Instead, developers often use another library.
Mocking can help when your code depends on:
- APIs
- Databases
- External services
- Third-party packages
A mock replaces a real dependency.
For example, you can return fake API data instead of making a real API request.
This can make tests faster.
It can also make tests more predictable.
How to Organize Mocha Test Files
A simple project can look like this:
project/
│
├── src/
│ ├── math.js
│ └── user.js
│
└── test/
├── math.test.js
└── user.test.js
Keeping tests in one folder makes them easier to find.
It also keeps your project organized.
How to Run Mocha Tests
After setup, run:
npm test
You can also run Mocha directly.
npx mocha
Mocha will run your test files.
Then it will show which tests passed or failed.
Mocha vs Jest
Mocha and Jest both help you test JavaScript code.
However, they work differently.
Mocha
Mocha mainly runs and organizes tests.
You may need extra tools for:
- Assertions
- Mocking
- Code coverage
This gives you flexibility.
Jest
Jest includes many features by default.
These include:
- Assertions
- Mocking
- Snapshot testing
- Code coverage
Therefore, Jest can be easier to start with.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose Mocha if you want more control.
You can select the testing tools you want.
Choose Jest if you want more features in one package.
Both are useful tools.
Your choice depends on your project.
Can You Use Mocha With Node.js?
Yes.
Mocha is widely used with Node.js applications.
You can test:
- Functions
- Modules
- APIs
- Controllers
- Services
- Middleware
For example:
function getGreeting(name) {
return `Hello, ${name}`;
}
describe("getGreeting", () => {
it("should return the correct greeting", () => {
assert.strictEqual(
getGreeting("John"),
"Hello, John"
);
});
});
Testing these parts separately can help you find bugs earlier.
Best Practices for Mocha Testing
A few simple practices can improve your tests.
1. Use Clear Test Names
Your test name should explain the expected result.
Avoid names like:
it("test 1", () => {
});
Instead, write:
it("should return true for an active user", () => {
});
Clear names make failed tests easier to understand.
2. Test One Thing at a Time
Each test should focus on one behavior.
Small tests are easier to read.
They are also easier to fix.
3. Test Edge Cases
Do not test only normal input.
Also test:
- Empty values
- Invalid input
- Zero
- Negative numbers
- Missing data
Edge cases can reveal hidden bugs.
4. Keep Tests Independent
One test should not depend on another.
Each test should work on its own.
This makes your test suite more reliable.
5. Keep Tests Organized
Use describe() blocks.
Group related tests together.
This makes your test files easier to read.
Advantages of Mocha
Mocha has several benefits.
- Simple syntax
- Flexible setup
- Async testing support
- Good Node.js support
- Browser support
- Useful hooks
- Support for different assertion libraries
Its flexibility is one of its biggest strengths.
Limitations of Mocha
Mocha also has some limits.
- It does not include every feature by default
- You may need extra libraries
- Setup can take more time
- Beginners may need to learn more tools
However, these extra choices also give you more control.
