Modern websites often need two things at the same time: fast page loading and rich user interaction. Unfortunately, traditional frontend architectures sometimes send a large amount of JavaScript to the browser even when only a few parts of a page actually need to be interactive.
For example, imagine a blog page containing an article, author information, related posts, a newsletter form, a search box, and a theme switcher. Most of the page is static content. Only the search box, newsletter form, and theme switcher need JavaScript.
Islands Architecture is designed around this idea.
Instead of turning the entire page into one large client-side JavaScript application, Islands Architecture keeps most of the page as static HTML and adds JavaScript only to specific interactive areas. Those interactive areas are called islands.
In this complete beginner’s guide, you will learn what Islands Architecture is, how it works, what hydration means, how islands differ from traditional SPAs, its advantages and disadvantages, how frameworks such as Astro use the concept, and when you should use Islands Architecture.
What Is Islands Architecture?
Islands Architecture is a web development pattern where most of a page is rendered as static or server-generated HTML, while individual interactive components are independently enhanced with JavaScript.
Think of a webpage as an ocean of static HTML containing small interactive islands.
For example:
Web Page
│
├── Header — Static HTML
├── Article — Static HTML
├── Author Bio — Static HTML
├── Search Box — Interactive Island
├── Related Posts — Static HTML
├── Newsletter Form — Interactive Island
└── Theme Switcher — Interactive IslandOnly the three interactive sections need client-side JavaScript.
Therefore, the browser does not necessarily need JavaScript for every component on the page.
Why Is It Called “Islands Architecture”?
The name comes from the visual idea of small interactive regions surrounded by mostly static content.
Imagine this page:
┌──────────────────────────────────────┐
│ Static Header │
│ │
│ Static Article Content │
│ │
│ ┌──────────────────────────┐ │
│ │ Interactive Search │ │
│ │ ISLAND │ │
│ └──────────────────────────┘ │
│ │
│ Static Related Content │
│ │
│ ┌──────────────────────────┐ │
│ │ Newsletter Signup │ │
│ │ ISLAND │ │
│ └──────────────────────────┘ │
│ │
│ Static Footer │
└──────────────────────────────────────┘The interactive components behave like isolated islands inside a mostly static page.
This differs from architectures where the complete page becomes one large interactive JavaScript application.
Why Was Islands Architecture Created?
JavaScript is extremely useful for building interactive websites. However, sending too much JavaScript has a cost.
The browser may need to:
Download JavaScript
↓
Parse JavaScript
↓
Compile JavaScript
↓
Execute JavaScript
↓
Initialize Components
↓
Attach InteractivityThe larger the JavaScript bundle becomes, the more work the user’s browser may need to perform.
This can be particularly noticeable on:
- slower phones
- low-powered devices
- slower networks
- content-heavy websites
Now consider a blog article.
Perhaps 90% of the page is simply:
Heading
Text
Images
Author information
Related links
FooterOnly a small portion needs interaction.
Sending a large JavaScript application for the entire page can therefore be unnecessary.
Islands Architecture tries to avoid that problem.
How Does Islands Architecture Work?
A simplified workflow looks like this:
Server / Build Process
↓
Generate Most of the Page as HTML
↓
Send HTML to Browser
↓
Page Becomes Visible
↓
Load JavaScript for Interactive Islands
↓
Activate Those IslandsFor example:
Blog Page
│
├── Article → HTML only
├── Author → HTML only
├── Related Posts → HTML only
│
├── Search → JavaScript
├── Comments → JavaScript
└── Theme Toggle → JavaScriptInstead of treating the entire page as one application, each interactive feature can have its own client-side boundary.
Traditional SPA vs Islands Architecture
Consider a traditional client-heavy single-page application.
Its architecture may look like:
Browser
↓
JavaScript Application
↓
Header
Article
Search
Comments
FooterEven components with no meaningful interaction may be represented inside the client-side application.
With Islands Architecture:
Static / Server HTML
│
├── Header
├── Article
├── Author
└── Footer
Interactive JavaScript
│
├── Search
└── CommentsTherefore, the amount of JavaScript required by the browser can potentially be reduced.
What Is Hydration?
To understand Islands Architecture, you should understand hydration.
Suppose a server generates this HTML:
<button>Like</button>The browser can display the button immediately.
However, the button does not automatically know what should happen when the user clicks it.
JavaScript must add interactive behavior.
For example:
button.addEventListener("click", () => {
// Like the post
});In JavaScript frameworks, the process of connecting client-side application behavior to server-rendered HTML is commonly called hydration.
Conceptually:
Server-Rendered HTML
↓
Browser Displays HTML
↓
JavaScript Loads
↓
Framework Activates Component
↓
Interactive UIWhat Is Partial Hydration?
Traditional hydration can involve activating a large part of the page.
For example:
Entire Page
↓
Hydration
↓
Entire Page InteractiveIslands Architecture instead allows hydration to focus on specific components.
Static Page
│
├── Static Header
├── Static Article
│
├── Search ← Hydrated
│
├── Comments ← Hydrated
│
└── Static FooterThis idea is commonly associated with partial hydration.
Only components that require browser-side behavior need client-side JavaScript.
What Is Selective Hydration?
Selective hydration generally refers to controlling which parts of a server-rendered application become interactive and when that work occurs.
For example:
Important Button
→ Activate early
Comments
→ Activate later
Below-the-fold Widget
→ Activate when visibleThe exact terminology and implementation vary between frameworks.
Therefore, partial hydration, selective hydration, and islands are related concepts, but they should not always be treated as identical technologies.
A Simple Islands Architecture Example
Imagine an article page:
<main>
<h1>What Is JavaScript?</h1>
<article>
<p>JavaScript is a programming language...</p>
</article>
<div>
<!-- Interactive Like Button -->
</div>
<footer>
Learn more about web development.
</footer>
</main>The heading, article, and footer require no JavaScript.
Only the Like button requires interaction.
Therefore:
Article
→ Static HTML
Like Button
→ Interactive IslandThis is the basic idea behind Islands Architecture.
Islands Architecture in Astro
Astro is one of the frameworks most strongly associated with modern Islands Architecture.
Astro’s approach is often described as server-first and content-driven. By default, UI framework components can be rendered without automatically shipping their framework JavaScript to the browser.
When a component needs client-side interactivity, Astro provides client:* directives.
For example:
<Counter client:load />Here, Counter becomes an interactive client-side component.
Meanwhile, the rest of the page can remain static HTML.
Astro Island Example
Imagine:
---
import Header from "../components/Header.astro";
import Article from "../components/Article.astro";
import Search from "../components/Search.jsx";
---
<Header />
<Article />
<Search client:load />The architecture becomes:
Header
→ Server/static HTML
Article
→ Server/static HTML
Search
→ Interactive islandOnly the Search component needs its client-side JavaScript.
Astro client:load
Consider:
<Counter client:load />client:load tells Astro to load and hydrate the component’s client JavaScript as the page loads.
This is useful when an interactive component should become available quickly.
Examples include:
- navigation menus
- important buttons
- interactive controls
- immediately visible forms
However, not every island needs to activate immediately.
Astro client:idle
Another option is:
<Comments client:idle />This allows hydration to wait until the browser has more opportunity to perform the work.
It can be useful for lower-priority interactive components.
For example:
Main Navigation
→ Important
Article
→ Static
Comments Widget
→ Lower priorityTherefore, the comments system does not necessarily need to compete with critical page work.
Astro client:visible
Consider:
<NewsletterForm client:visible />The component can wait until it becomes visible before its JavaScript is activated.
Imagine a newsletter form at the bottom of a long article.
If the user never scrolls to it, loading its interactive JavaScript immediately may provide little value.
With visibility-based hydration:
Page Loads
↓
Newsletter Below Viewport
↓
No Immediate Hydration
↓
User Scrolls
↓
Newsletter Becomes Visible
↓
Component ActivatesThis can reduce unnecessary initial work.
Astro client:media
You can also conditionally hydrate a component based on a media query.
Conceptually:
<MobileMenu client:media="(max-width: 768px)" />This can be useful when a particular interactive component is relevant only to certain screen conditions.
Therefore, client-side code can be delivered more intentionally.
Astro client:only
Sometimes a component should render only on the client.
For example:
<Map client:only="react" />This can be useful for components that rely heavily on browser-only functionality.
However, client:only is different from normal islands that can first produce server-rendered output and then become interactive.
Can Islands Use React?
Yes.
An island does not necessarily require a special component syntax.
For example, Astro can integrate UI components from frameworks such as React, Vue, Svelte, and others.
A React counter could look like:
import { useState } from "react";
export default function Counter() {
const [count, setCount] = useState(0);
return (
<button onClick={() => setCount(count + 1)}>
Count: {count}
</button>
);
}Then Astro can use it as an island:
<Counter client:visible />Therefore, Islands Architecture does not necessarily mean abandoning React.
Instead, React can be used only where its client-side capabilities are actually needed.
Islands Architecture vs Traditional React SPA
A traditional React SPA might begin with:
<div id="root"></div>Then React builds much of the interface in the browser.
Conceptually:
JavaScript
↓
React App
↓
Complete UIAn islands-based application may instead begin with a mostly complete HTML page:
HTML Page
│
├── Header
├── Article
├── Author
├── Footer
│
├── React Search Island
└── React Comments IslandTherefore, JavaScript becomes an enhancement for selected areas rather than the foundation of every page element.
Islands Architecture vs Server Components
Islands Architecture and React Server Components are related to the broader goal of reducing unnecessary client-side JavaScript, but they are not the same thing.
Islands Architecture
Think:
Mostly Static/Server HTML
+
Independent Interactive IslandsReact Server Components
Think:
Server Component Tree
+
Client Component BoundariesBoth approaches allow developers to keep certain logic away from the browser.
However, their rendering models and framework implementations differ.
Therefore:
Islands Architecture
≠
React Server ComponentsIslands Architecture vs SSR
Server-Side Rendering describes where and when HTML is generated.
For example:
Request
↓
Server
↓
HTML Generated
↓
BrowserIslands Architecture describes how interactivity is divided across a page.
Therefore, you can have:
SSR
+
IslandsThe server can render the page, while only selected sections receive client-side JavaScript.
Islands Architecture vs SSG
Islands Architecture also works extremely well with Static Site Generation.
For example:
Build Time
↓
Generate Blog Article
↓
Static HTML
↓
Add Interactive Search Island
↓
DeployTherefore:
SSG
+
Islandscan provide fast static content with selected interactive functionality.
This combination is especially useful for content-heavy websites.
Islands Architecture vs CSR
CSR generally relies more heavily on browser-side JavaScript.
A typical CSR architecture:
HTML Shell
↓
JavaScript Bundle
↓
Application Starts
↓
UI RenderedAn islands architecture:
Useful HTML
↓
Browser Displays Content
↓
Only Required Islands Load JSTherefore, islands can reduce the amount of JavaScript needed for pages that are mostly content.
However, a highly interactive web application may still benefit more from a client-heavy architecture.
Islands Architecture vs SPA
An SPA, or Single-Page Application, commonly maintains much of its application experience in the browser.
Examples include:
- project management systems
- web editors
- email clients
- complex dashboards
Islands Architecture is often more suitable when most of the page is content and only selected regions require interaction.
A simple comparison is:
| Feature | Islands Architecture | Traditional SPA |
|---|---|---|
| Main Page Output | Mostly HTML | Often JS-driven |
| JavaScript | Selective | Often application-wide |
| Hydration | Component/island focused | Broader |
| Content Sites | Excellent fit | Can be unnecessary |
| Highly Interactive Apps | Depends on requirements | Excellent fit |
| Static Generation | Excellent fit | Possible |
| Independent Interactive Areas | Core concept | Not necessarily |
Islands Architecture vs Progressive Enhancement
These concepts are closely related.
Progressive enhancement generally starts with a functional baseline and adds richer capabilities where supported.
For example:
HTML
↓
CSS
↓
JavaScript EnhancementIslands Architecture can follow a similar philosophy:
Static/Server HTML
↓
Interactive IslandsHowever, Islands Architecture is a more specific component-oriented architectural approach.
What Is an Interactive Island?
An interactive island is a component that needs browser-side JavaScript.
Examples include:
Search bar
Shopping cart
Image carousel
Video player
Like button
Comment form
Theme switcher
Interactive calculator
Newsletter form
MapThese components may use:
useState()or browser APIs such as:
localStorageTherefore, they need client-side execution.
What Should Not Be an Island?
Not every component needs JavaScript.
For example:
Article title
Paragraphs
Author biography
Product description
Static navigation links
Footer text
Documentation
Static imagesIf a component simply displays content, turning it into an interactive client-side island may be unnecessary.
A useful question is:
Does this component actually need to execute JavaScript in the browser?
If the answer is no, it may not need to be an island.
Example: Blog Website
Consider a technical blog page:
Blog Page
│
├── Header
├── Article
├── Code Examples
├── Author
├── Table of Contents
├── Search
├── Newsletter
└── FooterA possible islands architecture is:
Header → Static
Article → Static
Code Examples → Static
Author → Static
Table of Contents → Static or Island
Search → Island
Newsletter → Island
Footer → StaticMost of the page remains lightweight.
Example: E-Commerce Website
Consider a product page:
Product Page
│
├── Product Name
├── Description
├── Specifications
├── Reviews
├── Image Gallery
├── Quantity Selector
└── Add to CartA possible architecture is:
Product Name → Static
Description → Static
Specifications → Static
Reviews → Static/server-rendered
Image Gallery → Island
Quantity Selector → Island
Add to Cart → IslandTherefore, the informational parts do not require the same client-side runtime as the interactive shopping controls.
Example: Documentation Website
Documentation sites are particularly suitable for islands.
For example:
Documentation Page
│
├── Navigation
├── Article
├── Code Blocks
├── API Reference
├── Search
└── Theme TogglePossible architecture:
Navigation → Static HTML
Article → Static HTML
Code Blocks → Static HTML
API Reference → Static HTML
Search → Island
Theme Toggle → IslandOnly a small amount of JavaScript may be required.
Example: Marketing Website
A company landing page may contain:
Hero
Features
Testimonials
Pricing
FAQ
Contact Form
CalculatorPossible architecture:
Hero → Static
Features → Static
Testimonials → Static
Pricing → Static
FAQ → Static or small island
Contact Form → Island
Calculator → IslandThis can provide rich interaction without converting the entire marketing website into a large client-side application.
Benefits of Islands Architecture
1. Less JavaScript
One of the biggest advantages is reducing unnecessary client-side JavaScript.
Instead of:
Entire Page
→ JavaScriptyou can have:
Static Page
+
Small Interactive Components2. Faster Initial Loading
Static or server-generated HTML can be displayed without waiting for every interactive component to initialize.
As a result, users may see meaningful content sooner.
3. Reduced Hydration Work
If only a few components require hydration, the browser performs less initialization work.
This can be particularly helpful on lower-powered devices.
4. Better Content-Site Architecture
Blogs, documentation, news sites, and marketing websites contain large amounts of non-interactive content.
Islands Architecture matches these websites naturally.
5. Independent Interactivity
Different islands can be loaded according to their importance.
For example:
Navigation
→ Load immediately
Comments
→ Load when idle
Newsletter
→ Load when visibleThis gives developers greater control over browser work.
6. Framework Flexibility
Some islands-based frameworks allow different UI technologies to coexist.
For example:
React Island
Vue Island
Svelte Islandcould potentially exist within the same site when the framework supports those integrations.
However, using multiple frameworks should solve a real requirement rather than adding unnecessary complexity.
Performance Benefits
Imagine two versions of the same article.
Client-Heavy Version
Article
Header
Footer
Search
Comments
Newsletter
Theme Toggle
↓
Large Client JSIslands Version
Article → HTML
Header → HTML
Footer → HTML
Search → JS
Comments → JS
Newsletter → JS
Theme Toggle → JSThe second version can potentially send much less JavaScript.
As a result, the browser may spend less time:
- downloading scripts
- parsing JavaScript
- compiling JavaScript
- executing JavaScript
- hydrating components
However, the exact improvement depends on the application and implementation.
Islands Architecture and Core Web Vitals
Reducing unnecessary JavaScript can help improve user experience metrics.
For example, less client work may contribute to better:
- page responsiveness
- rendering performance
- interaction readiness
However, Islands Architecture does not automatically guarantee excellent Core Web Vitals.
You must still optimize:
Images
Fonts
CSS
Server response
Third-party scripts
Layout stability
Caching
Network requestsArchitecture is only one part of performance optimization.
Islands Architecture and SEO
Islands Architecture can be a strong fit for SEO-focused websites because the main content can exist as HTML before interactive JavaScript executes.
For example, a search engine can receive:
<h1>What Is Islands Architecture?</h1>
<p>
Islands Architecture is a web development pattern...
</p>without depending on an application-wide client render.
This can be useful for:
- blogs
- documentation
- tutorials
- news
- landing pages
- product content
However, SEO still depends on content quality, metadata, internal linking, structured data, performance, and crawlability.
Disadvantages of Islands Architecture
Islands Architecture is not perfect for every application.
1. Communication Between Islands Can Become Complex
Suppose:
Island A
→ Shopping Cart Button
Island B
→ Cart Counter
Island C
→ Checkout SummaryAll three need shared state.
If islands are designed as completely independent units, coordinating them may require additional client-side state architecture.
2. Not Ideal for Extremely Interactive Applications
Consider:
Figma-like editor
Video editor
Complex spreadsheet
Advanced project board
Browser gameNearly every part of these interfaces may be interactive.
In that situation, splitting everything into isolated islands may provide less benefit.
3. More Architectural Decisions
Developers need to decide:
What remains static?
What becomes interactive?
When should an island hydrate?
How should islands communicate?Poor boundaries can reduce the benefits.
4. Framework-Specific Behavior
Different frameworks implement island-like architectures differently.
Therefore, concepts learned in one framework may not map exactly to another.
When Should You Use Islands Architecture?
Islands Architecture is especially useful for content-heavy websites with limited interactive functionality.
Strong use cases include:
- blogs
- documentation sites
- news websites
- portfolios
- marketing websites
- landing pages
- e-commerce product pages
- educational websites
- content platforms
For example:
90% Content
10% Interactionis a very natural islands use case.
When Should You Avoid Islands Architecture?
It may be less suitable when most of the page is highly interactive.
Examples include:
- advanced design tools
- browser IDEs
- real-time editors
- complex dashboards
- games
- spreadsheet applications
- highly connected client-side workflows
If almost everything needs JavaScript, creating many isolated islands may not significantly reduce client-side work.
Islands Architecture and State Management
Local island state is straightforward.
For example:
function Counter() {
const [count, setCount] = useState(0);
return (
<button onClick={() => setCount(count + 1)}>
{count}
</button>
);
}However, global state can require more planning.
If multiple islands need the same information, you may need:
Shared client store
Browser events
URL state
Server state
Framework-specific state utilitiesTherefore, state architecture should be considered before creating many independent islands.
Islands Architecture with TanStack Query
Suppose an interactive product-search island needs server data.
The architecture could be:
Static Product Page
↓
Search Island
↓
TanStack Query
↓
Product APIHere:
- Islands Architecture controls where client JavaScript exists.
- TanStack Query controls server-state fetching and caching inside the interactive client area.
Therefore, these technologies can complement each other.
Islands Architecture with Zustand
Similarly, an island could use Zustand for shared client state.
For example:
AddToCart Island
↓
Zustand Cart Store
↑
CartCounter IslandBoth islands can communicate through a shared client-side store when the framework integration supports that architecture.
Therefore:
Islands
→ Interactive boundaries
Zustand
→ Shared client stateThey solve different problems.
Islands Architecture vs Micro Frontends
These concepts may sound similar because both divide an interface into smaller sections.
However, they solve different problems.
Islands Architecture
Focuses primarily on:
Rendering
Hydration
JavaScript delivery
InteractivityMicro Frontends
Focus primarily on:
Application ownership
Independent teams
Deployment boundaries
Large frontend organizationTherefore:
Islands Architecture
≠
Micro FrontendsA small website can use islands without using micro frontends.
Islands Architecture vs Code Splitting
Code splitting means dividing JavaScript into smaller bundles.
For example:
app.jsmay become:
home.js
search.js
dashboard.js
checkout.jsThis allows code to load only when needed.
Islands Architecture goes further by questioning whether certain components need client-side JavaScript at all.
Therefore:
Code Splitting
→ Load JS when needed
Islands Architecture
→ Avoid client JS where it isn't neededThe techniques can also be used together.
Islands Architecture vs Lazy Loading
Lazy loading delays loading a resource until it is needed.
For example:
Page Loads
↓
Map Not Visible
↓
User Scrolls
↓
Map LoadsIslands Architecture can use similar ideas.
An island might hydrate only when:
- the page loads
- the browser becomes idle
- the component becomes visible
- a media condition matches
Therefore, lazy loading can be part of an islands-based performance strategy.
Is Islands Architecture Only for Astro?
No.
Astro is strongly associated with the islands pattern, but the architectural idea is broader than one framework.
Different frameworks and tools may implement:
- partial hydration
- resumability
- server components
- selective hydration
- progressive enhancement
in different ways.
Therefore, it is better to learn the architectural principle rather than memorizing only one framework’s syntax.
Is Islands Architecture the Future of Web Development?
Islands Architecture is an important approach, particularly for content-heavy websites.
However, there is no single architecture that will replace every other model.
Different applications require different approaches.
For example:
Blog
→ Islands can be excellent
Documentation
→ Islands can be excellent
Marketing site
→ Islands can be excellent
Advanced browser editor
→ Client-heavy architecture may be betterModern web development increasingly focuses on sending only the JavaScript that users actually need.
Islands Architecture is one approach toward that goal.

Load immediately
Load when idle
Load when visible
Load conditionallyStep 10: Build a Real Project
Good projects include:
- technical blog

Common Beginner Mistakes
Making Everything an Island
If every component becomes:
Interactive Islandyou may lose much of the architectural benefit.
Keep non-interactive content server-rendered or static whenever appropriate.
Hydrating Everything Immediately
Not every interactive component is equally important.
A navigation button may need immediate JavaScript.
A footer newsletter form may not.
Therefore, choose hydration timing based on actual user needs.
Ignoring Shared State
Before splitting an application into many islands, determine how those components will communicate if they need shared state.
Assuming Islands Automatically Make a Site Fast
The architecture can reduce JavaScript, but performance can still suffer from:
Huge images
Slow APIs
Bad CSS
Large fonts
Third-party scripts
Poor caching
Slow hostingOptimize the complete application.
Frequently Asked Questions

Islands Architecture is a web development pattern where most of a page remains static or server-rendered HTML while selected interactive components receive client-side JavaScript.
Why is it called Islands Architecture?
Interactive components behave like small islands of JavaScript inside a larger sea of static HTML.
What is an island in web development?
An island is an independently interactive part of a webpage, such as a search box, cart button, form, carousel, or theme switcher.
What is partial hydration?
Partial hydration means activating client-side JavaScript only for selected parts of a server-rendered or statically generated page rather than hydrating everything.
Is Astro based on Islands Architecture?
Astro is one of the most well-known modern frameworks using an islands-oriented architecture.
Does Islands Architecture use JavaScript?
Yes.
However, JavaScript is generally sent only for components that require client-side interactivity.
Can I use React with Islands Architecture?
Yes.
Frameworks such as Astro can use React components as interactive islands.
Is Islands Architecture good for SEO?
It can be an excellent fit for SEO-focused content sites because primary content can be available as generated HTML without depending on client-side rendering.
Is Islands Architecture the same as SSR?
No.
SSR describes server-side page rendering, while Islands Architecture describes how client-side interactivity is divided across the page.
Is Islands Architecture the same as SSG?
No.
However, static generation and islands work very well together.
Is Islands Architecture the same as React Server Components?
No.
Both can reduce unnecessary client JavaScript, but they use different rendering models.
Is Islands Architecture good for e-commerce?
Yes, particularly for content-heavy product pages where only sections such as the cart, gallery, filters, and quantity controls need interactivity.
Is Islands Architecture good for dashboards?
It depends. A mostly informational dashboard with a few interactive widgets may benefit. A highly interactive dashboard may be better suited to a client-heavy architecture.
What framework should I learn for Islands Architecture?
Astro is a practical starting point because its architecture makes the islands concept easy to see and experiment with.
Conclusion
Islands Architecture is a web development approach that keeps most of a page as static or server-generated HTML while adding JavaScript only to the parts that actually need interactivity.
The simplest way to remember it is:
Mostly Static HTML
+
Small Interactive Islands
=
Islands ArchitectureFor example:
Blog Page
│
├── Header → Static
├── Article → Static
├── Author → Static
│
├── Search → Island
├── Comments → Island
├── Theme Toggle → Island
│
└── Footer → StaticInstead of asking:
How can we turn the entire webpage into a JavaScript application?
Islands Architecture encourages a different question:
Which parts of this page actually need JavaScript?
That change in thinking can reduce unnecessary client-side code and hydration work while still allowing developers to create rich interactive experiences.
The architecture is particularly well suited to blogs, documentation websites, landing pages, news sites, portfolios, educational websites, and content-heavy e-commerce pages.
For highly interactive applications, a traditional client-heavy architecture may still be more appropriate.
Ultimately, Islands Architecture is not about removing JavaScript. It is about using JavaScript more selectively—keeping content simple where possible and adding interactivity exactly where users need it.
