Building a SaaS platform like Shopify allows entrepreneurs and businesses to create, manage, and grow their own online stores without developing an e-commerce website from scratch.

Instead of building a separate website for every customer, you can develop a single SaaS platform where multiple merchants create their own stores, manage products, accept payments, and track orders through a shared system.

However, building an e-commerce SaaS platform requires more than a website builder. You also need multi-tenant architecture, store management, subscription billing, secure payments, and a reliable system for managing customer data.

In this guide, you will learn how to build a SaaS platform like Shopify, including its essential features, technology stack, database design, development process, and estimated costs.

1. What Is a SaaS Platform Like Shopify?

A Shopify-like SaaS platform is cloud-based software that allows businesses to create and operate their own online stores through a subscription-based service.

Instead of hiring developers to build an individual e-commerce website, merchants can register on your platform, select a store design, add products, and start selling online.

For example, imagine developing a platform called MyStore. A clothing business registers and creates a store called FashionHub, while an electronics seller creates a separate store called TechWorld.

Both businesses use the same SaaS infrastructure. However, each merchant has their own storefront, products, customers, orders, and payment settings.

The platform owner manages the shared infrastructure, software updates, subscriptions, and administrative operations.

A Shopify-like platform generally provides:

• Online store creation and customization.
• Product and inventory management.
• Shopping cart and checkout.
• Payment and shipping integrations.
• Customer and order management.
• Subscription plans and billing.
• Sales analytics and business reports.

The main goal is to provide merchants with the tools they need to run an online business without managing the underlying software infrastructure.

2. How Does a Shopify-Like SaaS Platform Work?

A Shopify-like SaaS platform connects merchants, online shoppers, and platform administrators through a shared backend.

First, a merchant creates an account and selects a subscription plan. Next, they configure their store, upload products, and connect a supported payment provider.

Customers can then visit the merchant’s storefront, browse products, and place orders.

Meanwhile, the merchant manages inventory, orders, and customer information through a dedicated dashboard.

A typical platform includes three main components.

Merchant dashboard: Allows business owners to manage their stores, products, customers, orders, and subscription settings.

Customer storefront: Displays products, categories, shopping carts, and checkout pages for each merchant’s customers.

Platform admin panel: Allows the SaaS owner to manage merchants, subscription plans, platform settings, and system operations.

All three components connect to a shared backend that handles authentication, store isolation, business logic, and database operations.

3. Choose Your SaaS Business Model

Before starting development, decide how your platform will generate revenue.

A Shopify-like platform commonly uses subscription-based pricing. However, you can combine subscriptions with additional services.

Monthly and annual subscriptions

Merchants pay a recurring fee to access your e-commerce platform.

For example, you could offer the following illustrative plans:

Starter

₹499/mo

Basic online store, product management, and standard support.

Business

₹1,499/mo

Custom domain, advanced reports, additional staff accounts, and higher limits.

Example pricing for planning purposes, not actual Shopify pricing.

You can also offer a free trial to help merchants explore the platform before purchasing a subscription.

Transaction-based revenue

Your platform can charge an additional fee on eligible transactions, subject to your payment-provider agreements and applicable requirements.

Premium features

Offer additional themes, advanced analytics, marketing tools, or integrations as paid upgrades.

For the first version, a simple subscription model can make billing and feature access easier to manage.

4. Essential Features of a Shopify-Like Platform

Your SaaS platform should provide merchants with the tools needed to create and operate their stores.

Start with the essential features before introducing advanced e-commerce functionality.

Merchant registration and store creation

Allow merchants to register, verify their email addresses, and create their online stores.

During setup, merchants should be able to enter their store name, business details, currency, and basic settings.

The system should generate a unique store identifier and storefront URL.

For example:

fashionhub.yourplatform.com

Merchants can initially use a platform-provided subdomain. Later, you can introduce custom domain support.

Storefront builder and theme customization

A storefront builder allows merchants to customize the appearance of their online stores.

Essential features include:

• Store logo and branding.
• Homepage banners and featured products.
• Product collections and categories.
• Store colors and typography.
• Navigation menus and footer content.
• Mobile-responsive layouts.

For the MVP, provide a small collection of professionally designed themes with configurable sections.

You do not need to develop a complete drag-and-drop website builder from the beginning.

Product and inventory management

Merchants should be able to add, edit, and manage their products through the dashboard.

Each product can include a title, description, images, price, category, stock quantity, and availability status.

Additionally, support product variants such as size and color when required.

For example, a clothing store may sell the same shirt in different sizes, with separate inventory quantities for each variant.

Shopping cart and checkout

Every storefront needs a reliable shopping cart and checkout process.

Customers should be able to add products, update quantities, enter delivery details, and complete purchases securely.

Before confirming an order, the backend must validate product prices, discounts, stock availability, and shipping charges.

Order and customer management

Merchants need a dashboard to manage incoming orders and customer information.

Important features include order history, payment status, fulfillment updates, cancellations, refunds, and customer contact details.

For physical products, you can also introduce shipment tracking and delivery management.

5. Choose the Right Technology Stack

Your technology stack determines how your SaaS platform performs, supports multiple stores, and handles future growth.

A Shopify-like platform can be developed using Next.js, Node.js, PostgreSQL, Flutter, and suitable cloud services.

Next.js – Storefronts and Merchant Dashboard

Build responsive online stores, merchant dashboards, product pages, and administrative interfaces. Server-side rendering can also support search-engine-friendly public storefront pages.

Flutter – Merchant Mobile Application

Develop Android and iOS applications that allow merchants to manage products, monitor orders, and receive business notifications.

Node.js and Express.js – Backend

Handle store creation, authentication, product management, checkout, subscription billing, and API integrations.

PostgreSQL – Database

Store merchants, stores, products, customers, orders, subscriptions, and payment records.

Cloud Storage and Hosting

Use suitable cloud services for storefront hosting, product images, database operations, backups, and application monitoring.

For example, you could use Next.js for the storefront builder and merchant dashboard, Node.js for backend APIs, and PostgreSQL for structured data.

Firebase Cloud Messaging can support mobile notifications, while managed object storage can handle product images and other uploaded files.

However, choose technologies according to your expected traffic, development budget, and operational requirements.

6. Design a Multi-Tenant SaaS Architecture

Multi-tenant architecture is one of the most important parts of building a Shopify-like platform.

It allows multiple merchants to use the same application infrastructure while keeping their store data separate.

For example, FashionHub and TechWorld can share the same backend and database infrastructure. However, FashionHub must not be able to access TechWorld’s private customer records, orders, or store settings.

Common database architecture options

Shared database and shared tables

Multiple merchants use the same tables. Each relevant record includes a store or tenant identifier, while backend authorization and database controls enforce data isolation.

Shared database with separate schemas

Merchants share a database server but use separate database schemas. This provides additional logical separation while increasing schema management requirements.

Separate database per merchant

Each merchant receives a dedicated database. This offers additional operational separation but requires more infrastructure and maintenance.

For an early-stage SaaS platform, a shared database can simplify infrastructure management.

However, every merchant-specific API request must verify the authenticated user’s access to the requested store.

Never rely only on a store ID submitted by the frontend to determine which merchant’s information a user can access.

7. Build the Storefront Builder

The storefront builder is the feature that allows merchants to create online stores without writing code.

Start with a theme-based system where merchants can select a design and customize predefined sections.

A basic storefront builder can include a homepage editor, product collections, navigation settings, and a live preview.

How to implement theme customization

Store theme settings in your database as structured configuration data.

For example, a store configuration may contain:

JSON

{
  "storeName": "FashionHub",
  "theme": "modern",
  "primaryColor": "#2563EB",
  "logoUrl": "/stores/fashionhub/logo.webp",
  "sections": [
    {
      "type": "hero",
      "enabled": true
    },
    {
      "type": "featured_products",
      "enabled": true
    }
  ]
}

Your storefront application can read this configuration and render the appropriate layout.

Additionally, provide a preview mode so merchants can review changes before publishing them.

For the first version, focus on a small number of customizable themes. Advanced drag-and-drop editing can be introduced later.

8. Implement Product, Cart, and Order Management

Product and order management are essential for every e-commerce platform.

Start by creating merchant APIs for adding products, updating inventory, and managing categories.

Next, build customer-facing APIs for product discovery, shopping carts, and checkout.

A typical order workflow includes:

1. Customer selects products and proceeds to checkout.
2. Backend validates prices, discounts, and stock availability.
3. The system creates an order and safely reserves inventory.
4. Customer completes the required payment.
5. Backend verifies payment and confirms the order.
6. Merchant receives the order and begins fulfillment.

Use database transactions or suitable concurrency controls to prevent overselling when multiple customers purchase the same product simultaneously.

Additionally, implement idempotent order and payment processing so repeated requests do not create duplicate orders.

9. Integrate Payments and SaaS Subscription Billing

A Shopify-like platform usually requires two separate payment workflows.

Merchant subscription billing: Merchants pay your SaaS business for access to the platform.

Storefront checkout: Customers pay individual merchants when purchasing products from their stores.

These workflows should be designed separately because they involve different customers, payment records, and settlement requirements.

Merchant subscription billing

You can use a suitable payment provider to manage monthly or annual subscription payments.

Your backend should track subscription status, billing periods, plan limits, and renewal events.

When a merchant upgrades their plan, the system can update their available features after verifying the relevant payment or subscription event.

Storefront payments

Each merchant needs an appropriate payment setup to accept customer purchases.

Depending on your business model, you may integrate merchant-connected payment accounts or a supported marketplace payment solution.

Payment providers such as Stripe Connect and Razorpay Route offer relevant capabilities, subject to regional availability, account eligibility, and provider requirements.

Importantly, never store raw payment card details in your own application unless you have the necessary compliant infrastructure.

Use trusted payment-provider checkout components and verify payment events through your backend.

10. Add Custom Domains and Store SEO

Custom domain support allows merchants to connect their own website addresses to your SaaS platform.

For example, a merchant may initially use:

fashionhub.yourplatform.com

Later, they can connect:

www.fashionhub.com

Your platform should verify domain ownership, configure the required DNS records, and provide HTTPS certificates.

Additionally, the backend must resolve each incoming hostname to the correct merchant store.

Implement storefront SEO

Search-engine optimization helps merchants make their public product and category pages discoverable.

Important SEO features include:

• Custom product titles and meta descriptions.
• Search-friendly product and category URLs.
• Canonical URLs and XML sitemaps.
• Product image alt text.
• Appropriate structured data.
• Mobile-responsive storefront pages.

For example, a merchant should be able to customize the SEO title and description of an individual product.

However, SEO features alone do not guarantee search rankings or organic traffic.

11. Build the SaaS Admin Panel

The platform administrator needs a centralized dashboard to manage merchants and monitor overall operations.

Essential features include merchant management, subscription monitoring, store status, platform settings, and support requests.

Additionally, the admin panel can display active stores, subscription revenue, platform usage, and infrastructure-related information.

For example, an administrator may need to suspend a store that violates platform policies or review a failed subscription payment.

Sensitive administrative actions should require appropriate permissions and generate audit records.

You can also introduce plan management, support ticketing, and system health monitoring as the platform grows.

12. Test and Launch Your SaaS Platform

Before launching, test the complete merchant and customer experience.

Verify that merchants can register, create stores, customize themes, upload products, and manage orders.

Also, test important scenarios such as:

• One merchant attempting to access another merchant’s data.
• Two customers purchasing the last available product.
• Failed or repeated payment notifications.
• Subscription expiration and plan upgrades.
• Custom domain configuration failures.
• Large product catalogs and slow network connections.
• Unauthorized access to private merchant APIs.

Once testing is complete, deploy the application using suitable cloud infrastructure.

Configure HTTPS, database backups, monitoring, secure file storage, and separate development and production environments.

Start with a limited number of merchants and collect feedback before expanding the platform.

13. How Much Does It Cost to Build a SaaS Platform Like Shopify?

The development cost depends on the number of features, storefront customization options, payment integrations, supported platforms, and infrastructure requirements.

A basic SaaS MVP may include merchant registration, store creation, predefined themes, product management, checkout, order tracking, and subscription billing.

However, a more advanced platform may require a drag-and-drop website builder, custom domains, marketing automation, shipping integrations, advanced analytics, and a third-party app ecosystem.

Your budget should account for application development, hosting, database services, file storage, payment processing, testing, security, and ongoing maintenance.

For an early-stage product, starting with essential e-commerce functionality can help reduce initial development costs.

You can introduce advanced features after validating your business model and collecting merchant feedback.
