How to Build a Payment Platform Like Stripe: A Complete Step-by-Step Guide

Online businesses need a reliable way to accept payments, manage transactions, issue refunds, handle subscriptions, and track financial activity.

A payment platform provides the infrastructure that connects businesses, customers, payment methods, banks, and other financial partners. Instead of every company building payment infrastructure from scratch, developers can integrate a payment platform through APIs and SDKs.

Stripe is a well-known example. It provides online payment APIs, checkout tools, subscriptions, marketplace payment infrastructure, invoicing, and other financial services.

Building a payment platform like Stripe is significantly more complex than building a normal SaaS application. It involves financial regulations, security requirements, payment networks, fraud prevention, reconciliation, and integrations with regulated financial institutions.

However, you can start with a focused payment product and gradually expand it.

This guide explains how to build a payment platform like Stripe, including its architecture, essential features, payment flow, technology stack, security, compliance, and development process.

1. What Is a Payment Platform Like Stripe?

A payment platform allows businesses to accept and manage digital payments through websites, mobile applications, and other software.

For example, imagine an e-commerce website where a customer purchases a product for ₹2,000.

Instead of the merchant manually communicating with banks, the application sends the payment request through its payment infrastructure.

The payment platform coordinates the transaction with the relevant payment providers and returns the result to the merchant application.

A modern payment platform can provide:

• Online payment APIs
• Hosted checkout
• Payment links
• Cards and supported local payment methods
• Refunds
• Recurring subscriptions
• Invoices
• Marketplace payments
• Merchant dashboards
• Transaction reports
• Webhooks
• Fraud detection
• Developer SDKs

The core objective is to make payment integration easier for businesses while maintaining secure and reliable transaction processing.

2. How Does a Payment Platform Work?

A payment transaction involves several systems rather than only the merchant and customer.

Consider a customer paying through a supported card.

A simplified flow looks like this:

Customer → Merchant → Payment Platform → Payment Processor/Acquirer → Card Network → Issuing Bank

The issuing bank evaluates the transaction and returns an approval or decline through the payment chain.

The payment platform then communicates the transaction status to the merchant.

For some payment methods, authentication or additional customer actions may also be required.

Your platform therefore needs to support payment states instead of assuming every transaction immediately succeeds or fails.

For example:

Created → Requires Action → Processing → Succeeded

or:

Created → Processing → Failed

Designing this state machine correctly is one of the most important parts of payment development.

3. Decide What Type of Payment Platform You Want to Build

Before writing code, define exactly what your platform will do.

Building a complete global payment ecosystem similar to Stripe from the beginning is generally unrealistic for a new product.

Instead, start with a focused model.

Payment orchestration platform

Connect businesses with one or more existing payment processors through your own unified API and dashboard.

Your platform manages integration and routing while regulated payment processing remains with appropriate providers.

Payment gateway

Provide merchants with an interface that securely sends payment information to supported processors or acquiring partners.

Subscription payment platform

Focus on recurring billing, subscription plans, invoices, renewals, and payment retries.

Marketplace payment platform

Help marketplaces collect customer payments and distribute eligible funds to sellers according to the supported payment-provider model.

Payment management SaaS

Provide businesses with transaction monitoring, reconciliation, analytics, payment links, invoices, and integrations on top of existing payment infrastructure.

For many startups, building software on top of licensed payment providers is much more practical than immediately attempting to become a full payment processor.

4. Essential Features of a Payment Platform

Start with the minimum features businesses need to integrate and manage payments.

Merchant accounts

Businesses should be able to create merchant accounts and configure their payment settings.

Depending on your operating model and partners, merchant onboarding may require business verification and additional compliance checks.

Payment API

Developers should be able to create and track payments through a secure API.

A simplified conceptual request could look like:

{
  "amount": 200000,
  "currency": "INR",
  "order_id": "order_123"
}

Using the smallest currency unit helps avoid floating-point errors. For INR, ₹2,000 can be represented as 200000 paise.

The backend can return a payment identifier and the next action required by the client.

Checkout

Provide a secure checkout experience where customers can complete payments.

A hosted checkout can reduce the amount of sensitive payment functionality merchants need to build themselves.

Refunds

Authorized merchants should be able to request full or partial refunds for eligible transactions.

Webhooks

Webhooks notify merchant systems when important payment events occur.

Examples include:

• Payment succeeded
• Payment failed
• Refund completed
• Subscription renewed
• Subscription payment failed
• Dispute updated

Webhooks are essential because many financial events happen asynchronously.

5. Design a PaymentIntent-Style Payment Model

A useful payment architecture separates the customer’s intention to pay from the final financial result.

Suppose a customer wants to pay ₹5,000.

Your backend creates a payment object containing:

Payment ID: pay_123
Amount: ₹5,000
Currency: INR
Status: Created
Merchant: merchant_456

The customer then completes the required payment process.

The status may become:

Processing

and eventually:

Succeeded

or:

Failed

This model is much safer than treating a single frontend API response as the final source of truth.

Payments can require authentication, remain pending, fail later, or receive asynchronous updates.

Therefore, define clear payment states and valid transitions between them.

6. Choose the Right Technology Stack

Payment infrastructure needs reliability, security, observability, and strong transactional consistency.

One possible technology stack is:

Next.js – Merchant Dashboard

Use Next.js for merchant onboarding, transaction management, payment reports, developer settings, and administrative interfaces.

---

Flutter – Merchant Mobile Application

Flutter can be used for merchant dashboards, transaction notifications, payment-link management, and reporting applications.

---

Node.js with NestJS – API Layer

NestJS can provide a structured backend for merchant APIs, authentication, payments, refunds, webhooks, and integrations.

For high-scale financial infrastructure, teams may also use languages such as Java, Kotlin, Go, or Rust for selected services.

---

PostgreSQL – Transactional Database

Store merchants, payment records, refunds, subscriptions, invoices, and other relational data.

---

Redis – Caching and Coordination

Use Redis selectively for caching, rate limiting, distributed coordination, and queue-related workloads.

Redis should not replace your authoritative financial transaction records.

---

Message Queue

A durable queue or event-streaming system can handle asynchronous operations such as webhooks, notifications, reconciliation, and provider updates.

Your technology choices matter, but correct financial workflows and data consistency are more important than selecting a fashionable framework.

7. Design the Payment Database

Payment databases require careful design because transaction records must remain consistent and auditable.

Your initial database may include:

Merchants

Business accounts, configuration, verification state, and enabled capabilities.

Customers

Merchant-scoped customer references and appropriate payment-related metadata.

Payments

Amounts, currencies, merchant references, provider references, and payment states.

Payment Attempts

Individual attempts made against a payment.

Refunds

Refund amount, reason, state, payment reference, and provider reference.

Subscriptions

Plans, billing intervals, customers, renewal dates, and status.

Invoices

Amounts, line items, taxes, due dates, and payment status.

Webhook Events

Events received from external payment providers and events delivered to merchants.

Ledger Entries

Financial movements recorded through an auditable accounting model.

Avoid deleting financial transaction records simply because a payment was cancelled or refunded.

Instead, preserve the history and record the appropriate state changes or reversing entries.

8. Build a Reliable Ledger

One major difference between an ordinary application and serious financial software is the need for accurate money movement records.

A ledger records financial changes in a consistent and auditable way.

For example, suppose a marketplace receives ₹1,000 from a customer.

Depending on the platform’s legal and financial model, the system may need to represent amounts associated with the merchant, platform fees, refunds, or other balances.

A double-entry ledger is commonly used for financial systems because each recorded movement has corresponding entries that remain balanced.

Important principles include:

• Store money using integer minor units where appropriate.
• Never use floating-point values for monetary calculations.
• Keep immutable financial history where appropriate.
• Use database transactions.
• Record timestamps and references.
• Make operations idempotent.
• Reconcile internal records with external providers.

Do not simply maintain a single merchant_balance number and modify it without a traceable transaction history.

As the system grows, such an approach becomes difficult to audit and reconcile.

9. Implement Idempotency

Payment APIs must handle repeated requests safely.

Imagine a merchant sends a payment request but loses internet connectivity before receiving the response.

The merchant application retries the same request.

Without protection, your backend might accidentally create multiple payment operations.

An idempotency key solves this problem.

For example:

Idempotency-Key: order-payment-92831

Your server associates the key with the original operation.

If the same request is safely retried according to your API contract, the system can return the existing result instead of creating an unintended duplicate.

Use idempotency for operations such as:

• Creating payments
• Capturing payments
• Creating refunds
• Processing webhook events
• Creating payouts where applicable

However, define the idempotency scope, expiration, request matching, and concurrency behavior carefully.

10. Build Secure Checkout

Checkout is where customers interact directly with the payment process.

The page should clearly display:

• Merchant information
• Order amount
• Currency
• Supported payment methods
• Payment status
• Relevant errors

Whenever possible, reduce the amount of sensitive payment data that passes through your own servers.

For card payments, tokenization or provider-hosted payment components can help reduce direct exposure to raw card information.

Never store sensitive authentication data such as CVV after authorization.

Your exact responsibilities depend on your architecture and integrations, so payment security requirements should be reviewed before production development.

11. Build Refund Management

Refunds should be treated as separate financial operations rather than simply changing a payment from “successful” to “refunded.”

Suppose a customer pays ₹2,000.

Later, the merchant refunds ₹500.

The original payment still occurred.

Your records should represent:

Payment: ₹2,000 – Succeeded

Refund: ₹500 – Succeeded

Remaining unrefunded amount: ₹1,500

Your system should support full and partial refunds where the underlying provider supports them.

Additionally, validate that cumulative successful refunds do not exceed the refundable amount.

Refund operations should also use idempotency and maintain a complete audit trail.

12. Implement Webhooks Correctly

Webhooks allow payment systems to communicate asynchronously.

For example, an external processor may send:

payment.succeeded

Your backend receives the event and updates the corresponding payment according to verified provider data.

When your platform sends webhooks to merchants, the same reliability principles apply.

A webhook system should include:

• HTTPS endpoints
• Request signatures
• Event IDs
• Retry logic
• Delivery attempts
• Event timestamps
• Delivery status
• Duplicate-event protection

Merchant applications should verify webhook signatures before trusting event payloads.

Your system should also expect webhook delivery to be duplicated or arrive later than expected.

Never assume an event will be delivered exactly once.

13. Add Subscription Billing

Once one-time payments are stable, you can introduce recurring billing.

Businesses should be able to create plans such as:

Basic Plan

₹499/month

Professional Plan

₹1,499/month

Business Plan

₹4,999/month

The subscription system needs to manage:

• Plans or prices
• Customers
• Billing periods
• Subscription status
• Invoices
• Renewals
• Payment failures
• Cancellation
• Trials
• Applicable taxes

Recurring billing becomes more complex when you introduce upgrades, downgrades, prorations, usage-based pricing, and multiple currencies.

Start with simple fixed recurring plans before adding advanced billing models.

14. Build Marketplace Payments

Platforms serving multiple sellers require more advanced payment workflows.

Consider a marketplace where a customer purchases a product from a seller.

The system may need to track:

Customer Payment

₹1,000

Platform Fee

₹100

Seller Amount

₹900 before other applicable adjustments.

However, you cannot design marketplace fund flows based only on software logic.

Who legally receives funds, who can hold them, how sellers are onboarded, and how payouts operate depend on your payment partners, contracts, and applicable regulations.

Use regulated payment infrastructure designed for platform or marketplace payments instead of independently holding customer or seller funds without the required framework.

15. Build the Merchant Dashboard

Businesses need a dashboard where they can understand and manage payment activity.

The dashboard can include:

• Total payment volume
• Successful transactions
• Failed transactions
• Refunds
• Customers
• Subscriptions
• Invoices
• Webhooks
• API credentials
• Reports

Provide search and filters for transaction ID, customer, date, amount, currency, and status.

Merchants should also be able to open a transaction and see its complete timeline.

For example:

10:30 AM – Payment created
10:31 AM – Authentication completed
10:31 AM – Payment processing
10:32 AM – Payment succeeded
10:32 AM – Webhook delivered

A clear timeline makes payment issues much easier to investigate.

16. Create Developer APIs and SDKs

Developer experience is a major part of a payment platform.

A merchant should not need to understand your internal architecture to accept a payment.

Provide a clean REST API or another carefully designed interface.

For example:

POST /v1/payments
GET /v1/payments/{id}
POST /v1/refunds
GET /v1/customers
POST /v1/subscriptions

Create clear documentation explaining:

• Authentication
• API keys
• Request parameters
• Response objects
• Errors
• Idempotency
• Pagination
• Webhooks
• Test mode

Later, you can provide official SDKs for popular environments such as JavaScript/TypeScript, Flutter/Dart, Python, Java, PHP, and Go.

Keep API versions stable so future platform changes do not unexpectedly break merchant applications.

17. Provide Test and Live Modes

Developers need a safe environment for testing payment integrations.

Create separate test and production environments.

For example:

Test API Key
test_xxxxxxxxx

Live API Key
live_xxxxxxxxx

Test mode should allow developers to simulate scenarios such as:

• Successful payment
• Declined payment
• Authentication required
• Processing payment
• Failed payment
• Successful refund
• Failed refund
• Subscription renewal
• Webhook retries

Test transactions must never create real financial movements.

Production credentials should also be clearly separated from test credentials.

18. Implement API Key Security

Merchant APIs need strong authentication.

A merchant can have separate publishable/client-side identifiers and secret server-side credentials where your architecture requires them.

Secret API credentials should never be placed inside public frontend JavaScript or mobile applications where they can be extracted.

Store credentials securely and display full secret values only according to a carefully designed credential-management process.

Support features such as:

• Key rotation
• Key revocation
• Restricted credentials
• Environment separation
• Usage logs

For higher-security integrations, you can introduce scoped credentials so merchants grant only the permissions required by a particular system.

19. Add Fraud Detection and Risk Controls

Payment platforms are targets for fraudulent activity.

Basic risk signals can include:

• Unusual transaction velocity
• Repeated failed attempts
• Suspicious account activity
• Device and network signals
• Abnormal transaction amounts
• Merchant risk patterns

A risk engine can combine signals and determine whether an operation should proceed, require additional checks, or be reviewed.

However, fraud systems should not rely on simplistic rules alone.

False positives can block legitimate customers, while weak rules can allow abusive activity.

Start with controls available through your payment partners and carefully designed platform-level risk monitoring.

As transaction volume grows, your risk system can become more sophisticated.

20. Handle KYC and Merchant Verification

A payment platform may need to verify businesses or individuals before enabling certain financial capabilities.

Depending on your operating model, this can involve:

• Business information
• Authorized representatives
• Bank account details
• Identity verification
• Tax information
• Business category
• Required supporting documents

Do not design verification requirements solely from assumptions.

Requirements depend on your jurisdiction, financial partners, products, and regulatory classification.

For many startups, integrating a compliant onboarding service or regulated payment partner is more practical than building every verification process independently.

21. Understand PCI DSS and Payment Security

If your system stores, processes, or transmits cardholder data, PCI DSS requirements may apply.

Your exact scope depends heavily on how payment information moves through your architecture.

A safer design generally minimizes direct access to sensitive card information.

Use supported tokenization and hosted payment components where appropriate.

In addition, implement:

• Encryption in transit
• Encryption at rest where appropriate
• Strong access controls
• Secure secrets management
• Logging and monitoring
• Vulnerability management
• Dependency security
• Incident response procedures

Payment security is not something to add after development is complete.

It should influence the architecture from the beginning.

22. Understand Regulatory Requirements

A payment platform is not only a software project.

Depending on what the business actually does, financial regulations and licensing requirements may apply.

For example, an India-focused platform may need to consider requirements and directions issued by the Reserve Bank of India, alongside other applicable laws, network rules, contractual requirements, and security standards.

The requirements differ significantly depending on whether you operate as a software provider, gateway, payment aggregator, marketplace platform, or another type of financial service.

Therefore, define the financial model before designing production infrastructure.

Legal and compliance professionals familiar with the target market should review the final operating model.

23. Add Reconciliation

Payment reconciliation verifies that your internal transaction records match records from processors, acquiring partners, banks, or other financial systems.

Suppose your database shows 10,000 successful payments during a period.

You should be able to verify those records against the relevant external settlement or transaction reports.

Reconciliation can identify:

• Missing transactions
• Incorrect amounts
• Duplicate records
• Missing refunds
• Fee differences
• Settlement differences

Automate reconciliation where possible.

Transactions that do not match should be placed into an exception workflow for investigation rather than silently modifying financial records.

24. Build Monitoring and Reliability Systems

Payment infrastructure must remain observable.

Monitor important metrics such as:

• API response times
• Payment success rates
• Payment failures
• Provider errors
• Webhook failures
• Queue delays
• Database performance
• Reconciliation exceptions

Configure alerts for unusual conditions.

For example, if the normal payment success rate suddenly falls significantly, your engineering team should be alerted quickly.

Also implement structured logs and distributed tracing where appropriate.

However, never place sensitive payment information or credentials inside application logs.

25. Test the Complete Payment Flow

Testing should cover much more than a successful payment.

Test complete scenarios such as:

• Successful payments
• Declined transactions
• Customer authentication
• Payment timeout
• Duplicate API requests
• Duplicate webhooks
• Partial refunds
• Full refunds
• Multiple refund requests
• Subscription renewals
• Failed recurring payments
• Provider outages
• Database failures
• Delayed provider responses

Also test concurrency.

For example, two refund requests arriving at almost the same time must not cause the refunded amount to exceed the original eligible payment.

Automated integration testing is extremely important for financial workflows.

26. How Much Does It Cost to Build a Payment Platform Like Stripe?

The cost varies dramatically depending on what you mean by “like Stripe.”

A payment management MVP built on top of existing processors is very different from operating independent regulated payment infrastructure.

A focused MVP might include:

Phase 1 – Payment Core

Merchant accounts, payment APIs, checkout, transaction dashboard, refunds, webhooks, and test mode.

Phase 2 – Billing

Customers, invoices, subscriptions, recurring payments, and reporting.

Phase 3 – Platform Features

Marketplace integrations, merchant onboarding, advanced reconciliation, risk controls, and additional payment methods.

Phase 4 – Advanced Infrastructure

Multi-region reliability, advanced fraud systems, additional financial partners, sophisticated billing, and enterprise developer tooling.

The budget should also include security audits, compliance work, infrastructure, monitoring, payment-provider costs, legal work, and ongoing maintenance.

For most new companies, starting with regulated payment partners substantially reduces the initial complexity.

27. Frequently Asked Questions

Can I build a payment platform using Flutter?

Yes, but Flutter would normally handle the client-side application rather than the complete payment infrastructure.

You can use Flutter for merchant apps, payment screens, transaction dashboards, and other mobile experiences.

Sensitive payment logic should remain on secure backend infrastructure.

Can I use Firebase or Supabase?

Yes, they can support selected functionality such as authentication, notifications, dashboards, or supporting application data.

However, your authoritative financial records and ledger architecture require strong transactional consistency, auditability, and careful access controls.

Do not design a production payment ledger as if it were an ordinary CRUD application.

Can I build my own Stripe alternative?

You can build payment software with similar developer-facing concepts.

However, directly processing, holding, settling, or moving money may introduce substantial regulatory, banking, network, compliance, and security requirements.

A practical starting point is often to build your software layer on top of regulated payment providers.

How long does it take to build a payment platform?

A focused payment product built on existing financial infrastructure may take several months to develop and test.

A broad payment infrastructure company comparable in scope to mature global payment providers is a long-term undertaking involving engineering, financial partnerships, security, compliance, and operations.

Can AI be used in a payment platform?

Yes.

AI and machine learning can assist with fraud analysis, merchant support, transaction categorization, anomaly detection, and operational investigation.

However, high-impact financial decisions should include appropriate controls, monitoring, explainability where required, and human review when appropriate.

Conclusion

Building a payment platform like Stripe requires much more than creating a checkout page and connecting a payment API.

A reliable platform needs payment state management, refunds, webhooks, idempotency, merchant accounts, developer APIs, security, reconciliation, and accurate financial records.

Start with a focused product built around regulated payment infrastructure.

Once the payment core is reliable, you can introduce subscriptions, invoicing, marketplace functionality, additional payment methods, fraud controls, and advanced developer tools.

Most importantly, treat security, compliance, financial accuracy, and reliability as core product requirements from the first version.
