Building a multi-vendor marketplace like Amazon allows businesses to create an online platform where multiple independent sellers can list products, manage inventory, and sell directly to customers.
Unlike a traditional e-commerce store, a multi-vendor marketplace connects buyers with different sellers through a single website or mobile application. Meanwhile, the platform owner manages vendor registrations, payments, commissions, and overall marketplace operations.
However, building a marketplace requires more than a shopping cart and product listings. You also need vendor management, secure payments, inventory tracking, order fulfillment, and a reliable system for managing multiple sellers.
In this guide, you will learn how to build a multi-vendor marketplace like Amazon, including its essential features, technology stack, database design, development process, and estimated costs.
1. What Is a Multi-Vendor Marketplace?
A multi-vendor marketplace is an online platform where multiple independent sellers can register, list products, and sell to customers through a shared website or application.
The marketplace owner provides the technology and manages platform operations. Sellers handle their products, pricing, inventory, and order fulfillment according to the marketplace’s business model.
For example, imagine developing an online marketplace called MyMarket. A clothing seller registers and uploads fashion products, while an electronics seller lists smartphones and accessories.
Customers can browse products from both sellers and purchase them through the same platform.
Meanwhile, each vendor receives access to a dedicated dashboard for managing products, orders, and earnings.
Popular examples of multi-vendor marketplaces include Amazon, Flipkart and Etsy.
2. How Does a Multi-Vendor Marketplace Work?
A multi-vendor marketplace connects customers, sellers, and administrators through a shared backend.
First, sellers register and create their stores. Next, they upload products, configure pricing, and manage available inventory.
Customers can then search for products, add items to their carts, and complete purchases.
After an order is placed, the system identifies the relevant sellers and creates the appropriate fulfillment records.
A typical marketplace includes three main components.
Customer application: Allows shoppers to browse products, manage their carts, make payments, and track orders.
Seller dashboard: Allows vendors to manage product listings, inventory, orders, shipping, and earnings.
Admin panel: Allows the marketplace owner to manage sellers, customers, commissions, payments, and platform operations.
All three components connect to a shared backend that manages authentication, product information, transactions, and user permissions.
3. Choose Your Marketplace Business Model
Before development, decide how your marketplace will generate revenue.
Your business model determines the payment structure, seller onboarding process, and platform features.
Commission-based marketplace
The platform charges sellers a percentage of eligible sales.
For example, if a seller completes a ₹2,000 order and your marketplace charges a 10% commission, the gross platform commission would be ₹200.
The seller’s amount before applicable fees, taxes, refunds, and other adjustments would be ₹1,800.
Seller subscription plans
Sellers pay monthly or annual fees to access your marketplace.
For example, you can offer a free plan with limited product listings and a premium plan with additional features.
Advertising and sponsored listings
Sellers can pay to promote eligible products through sponsored placements.
However, sponsored products should be clearly identified so customers can distinguish advertisements from regular search results.
You can also combine commissions, subscriptions, and advertising to create multiple revenue streams.
For the first version, choose a simple revenue model that matches your target sellers and operational requirements.
4. Essential Features of a Marketplace Like Amazon
A complete marketplace requires separate functionality for customers, sellers, and administrators.
Start with the features needed to create product listings, process orders, and manage payments.
Customer application
Customers need a simple interface for discovering products and completing purchases.
Essential features include:
- Registration, login, and profile management.
- Product search, categories, filters, and sorting.
- Product details, images, prices, and availability.
- Shopping cart and wishlist.
- Secure checkout and multiple delivery addresses.
- Order tracking, cancellations, and returns.
- Product ratings and verified purchase reviews.
For the MVP, prioritize product discovery, checkout, and order management. Advanced recommendations can be introduced later.
Seller dashboard
Each seller needs a dedicated dashboard to manage their marketplace business.
Important features include product creation, inventory management, order processing, shipping updates, and earnings reports.
Additionally, sellers should be able to update prices, manage product variants, and respond to customer inquiries.
For example, a clothing seller can add a shirt in different sizes and maintain separate inventory quantities for each variant.
Admin panel
The administrator manages the overall marketplace.
Essential features include seller approval, customer management, product moderation, commission settings, payment monitoring, and dispute resolution.
The admin panel should also provide reports on sales, active sellers, completed orders, refunds, and platform activity.
5. Choose the Right Technology Stack
Your technology stack determines how your marketplace performs, handles customer traffic, and supports future expansion.
For example, you can build mobile applications using Flutter, develop the website with Next.js, and manage backend operations through Node.js.
Next.js – Marketplace Website and Admin Panel
Build responsive product pages, category listings, customer accounts, seller dashboards, and administrative interfaces. Server-rendered public pages can also support search-engine discoverability.
Flutter – Customer and Seller Mobile Apps
Develop Android and iOS applications using a shared codebase. Flutter supports product browsing, checkout, order tracking, and seller management.
Node.js and Express.js – Backend
Handle authentication, product management, inventory, order processing, payment verification, and seller permissions.
PostgreSQL – Database
Store customer accounts, seller profiles, products, inventory, orders, payments, and commission records.
Firebase and Cloud Services
Use Firebase Cloud Messaging for push notifications and suitable cloud storage services for product images and other uploaded files.
You can also use Supabase for managed PostgreSQL, authentication, and storage.
However, choose technologies according to your development budget, expected traffic, and marketplace requirements.
6. Design Your Marketplace Database
A well-organized database helps your platform manage multiple sellers, products, and customer transactions.
Your initial database should contain the following entities.
Users and Sellers
Store customer accounts, seller profiles, business details, verification status, and user permissions.
Products and Categories
Store product titles, descriptions, images, categories, prices, and seller references.
Inventory and Product Variants
Track available quantities, product sizes, colors, SKUs, and warehouse information.
Orders and Order Items
Store customer purchases, individual seller items, quantities, prices, and fulfillment status.
Payments and Seller Settlements
Track payment references, commissions, seller earnings, refunds, and payout status.
Each product should be linked to the correct seller. Similarly, each order item should retain its seller information and the price charged at checkout.
Moreover, your backend must verify seller permissions before allowing vendors to modify products or access order details.
For example, one seller must not be able to view another seller’s private customer information or change their product prices.
7. Build Seller Registration and Product Management
Seller onboarding is one of the most important marketplace workflows.
Start by creating a registration process where sellers can enter their business information, create a store profile, and submit any required verification details.
Depending on your marketplace’s location and payment provider, sellers may also need to provide identity, tax, and payout account information.
After reviewing the application, the administrator can approve the seller and enable product publishing.
Product management
Approved sellers should be able to add products with the following information:
- Product title and description.
- Category and brand.
- Product images.
- Price and available quantity.
- Size, color, and other variants.
- Shipping details and availability.
Additionally, implement product moderation to help prevent prohibited listings, misleading descriptions, and duplicate catalog entries.
For a marketplace where multiple sellers offer the same product, you can introduce a shared product catalog with separate seller offers.
For example, several sellers may offer the same smartphone model at different prices and delivery times.
This approach reduces duplicate product pages while allowing customers to compare available offers.
8. Build Product Search, Cart, and Checkout
Product discovery is a core part of the customer experience.
Customers should be able to search for products, browse categories, apply filters, and compare available options.
For the first version, implement search using your database’s supported text-search capabilities.
As your product catalog grows, you can introduce a dedicated search service for advanced filtering, autocomplete, and relevance ranking.
Multi-vendor shopping cart
Your shopping cart should allow customers to purchase products from different sellers in one checkout.
For example, a customer may add a shirt from Seller A and headphones from Seller B.
During checkout, the backend must validate each product’s current price, available stock, shipping charges, and applicable discounts.
After the customer places the order, the system should create seller-specific fulfillment records.
This allows each vendor to process their own items while the customer sees a consolidated order history.
9. Integrate Payments and Seller Commissions
Payment integration is more complex in a multi-vendor marketplace because a single customer order may involve several independent sellers.
Your platform needs to manage customer payments, marketplace commissions, seller earnings, refunds, and settlements.
Payment providers such as Stripe Connect and Razorpay Route offer marketplace-oriented payment capabilities, subject to regional availability and account eligibility.
A typical payment workflow includes:
- Customer selects products and proceeds to checkout.
- The backend validates prices, inventory, and shipping charges.
- The system creates an order and safely reserves available inventory.
- Customer completes the required payment.
- The backend verifies payment and confirms the order.
- The system records marketplace commissions and seller payable amounts.
- Eligible seller payments are settled according to the configured payout process.
Importantly, never confirm a paid order based only on a payment-success screen.
Instead, verify transactions through trusted backend payment events.
Additionally, make payment processing idempotent so repeated notifications cannot create duplicate orders or settlement records.
10. Implement Inventory, Shipping, and Order Tracking
Inventory and order management help sellers fulfill customer purchases accurately.
For example, when a customer purchases the last available unit of a product, the system must prevent another customer from purchasing the same stock.
Use database transactions or appropriate concurrency controls to reserve inventory safely.
Shipping and delivery management
Your marketplace can support different fulfillment models.
Seller-managed fulfillment: Sellers pack and ship their own products using supported delivery services.
Marketplace-managed fulfillment: The platform manages warehousing, packing, shipping, or selected logistics operations.
For the first version, seller-managed fulfillment may reduce the need to build and operate your own logistics infrastructure.
You can integrate suitable shipping providers for label generation, shipment tracking, and delivery updates.
Order tracking
A typical order may move through the following stages:
- Order placed
- Payment confirmed
- Seller processing
- Shipped
- Out for delivery
- Delivered
For multi-vendor orders, each seller’s shipment may have a different delivery date and tracking number.
Therefore, customers should be able to view individual shipment details within their order history.
11. Add Ratings, Reviews, and Customer Support
Customer feedback helps shoppers understand previous buyers’ experiences with products and sellers.
Allow customers to submit ratings and reviews after eligible purchases.
Additionally, display verified purchase indicators only when the system can confirm that the reviewer purchased the relevant product.
Your marketplace should also provide tools for reporting inappropriate reviews and misleading product listings.
Customer support
Customers may need assistance with delayed deliveries, damaged products, cancellations, or refunds.
For the MVP, you can introduce a support ticket system where customers submit requests and administrators manage responses.
Later, you can add live chat, automated support workflows, and seller-specific dispute management.
However, customer information should only be shared with sellers when necessary for legitimate order fulfillment or support activities.
12. Build the Marketplace Admin Panel
The admin panel allows the platform owner to manage sellers, products, customers, and marketplace operations.
Essential features include:
- Seller registration and approval.
- Product listing moderation.
- Customer and user management.
- Order and payment monitoring.
- Commission and settlement management.
- Refunds, returns, and dispute handling.
- Marketplace reports and analytics.
Additionally, administrators should be able to configure product categories, marketplace policies, and seller permissions.
For example, an administrator may need to review a reported product listing or temporarily restrict a seller account.
Sensitive administrative actions should require appropriate permissions and generate audit records.
13. Implement Marketplace Security
A multi-vendor marketplace stores customer information, seller records, payment references, and business data.
Therefore, security should be included throughout development.
Start with secure authentication and role-based access control.
Your backend should verify that each seller can access only their own private business information.
Additionally, implement HTTPS, secure file uploads, database backups, and appropriate API rate limits.
Use trusted payment-provider integrations rather than storing raw payment card information in your application.
For marketplaces operating across different regions, review applicable consumer protection, privacy, tax, and seller verification requirements before launch.
14. Test and Launch Your Marketplace
Before launching, test the complete customer, seller, and administrator workflows.
Verify that sellers can register, upload products, manage inventory, and process orders.
Similarly, confirm that customers can search for products, complete checkout, track deliveries, and request refunds.
Test important scenarios such as:
- Two customers purchasing the last available product.
- One seller attempting to access another seller’s private data.
- Failed payments and duplicate payment notifications.
- Multiple sellers fulfilling items from the same order.
- Product returns and partial refunds.
- Incorrect inventory quantities.
- Slow loading with large product catalogs.
Once testing is complete, deploy your application using suitable cloud infrastructure.
Configure HTTPS, database backups, monitoring, secure storage, and separate development and production environments.
Start with a limited number of sellers and customers. Then collect feedback and improve the platform before expanding.
15. How Much Does It Cost to Build a Marketplace Like Amazon?
The development cost depends on the number of features, supported platforms, payment integrations, logistics requirements, and expected customer traffic.
A basic marketplace MVP may include a customer website, seller dashboard, admin panel, product management, checkout, and order tracking.
However, an advanced marketplace may require dedicated mobile applications, automated seller settlements, warehouse management, personalized recommendations, and complex shipping integrations.
Your development budget should account for application development, hosting, database services, payment processing, file storage, testing, security, and ongoing maintenance.
Starting with a focused MVP can help control initial costs. Moreover, you can introduce advanced functionality as your seller network and customer base grow.
