Flutter applications often become larger as new features, packages, images, fonts, and native SDKs are added. At first, a few extra megabytes may not seem important. However, app size can gradually become a real problem, especially for users with limited storage or slower internet connections.

Fortunately, Flutter provides built-in tools for understanding what contributes to the final application size. Instead of randomly removing packages or compressing every asset, you can generate a size report and inspect it with the Flutter DevTools App Size tool.

In this guide, you will learn how to analyze Flutter app size with DevTools, understand the generated size report, identify large assets and dependencies, compare builds, and reduce unnecessary application size.

---

What Is Flutter App Size Analysis?

Flutter app size analysis is the process of examining the compiled application to understand which files, libraries, assets, packages, and code contribute to its total size.

For example, your application might contain:

Flutter App
│
├── Dart Code
├── Flutter Engine
├── Native Libraries
├── Images
├── Fonts
├── Animations
├── Audio
└── Third-Party SDKs

Simply checking the final APK size tells you how large the package is. However, it does not explain why it is large.

Flutter’s size-analysis tools provide that missing information.

A typical workflow looks like this:

Build Release App
        ↓
Generate Size Report
        ↓
Open Flutter DevTools
        ↓
Use App Size Tool
        ↓
Inspect Treemap
        ↓
Find Large Components
        ↓
Optimize Them
        ↓
Generate Another Report

As a result, app-size optimization becomes a measurable process instead of guesswork.

---

Why Flutter App Size Matters

App size directly affects the user experience before the application is even opened.

A large application may require more:

• Download time
• Mobile data
• Device storage
• Installation time
• Update bandwidth

Additionally, users with budget Android devices may have limited available storage.

For example, imagine two similar applications:

App A → 35 MB

App B → 140 MB

If both provide similar functionality, users with limited storage may prefer the smaller download.

Therefore, reducing unnecessary app size can make your Flutter application easier to distribute and install.

At the same time, size optimization should not remove important functionality merely to save a few kilobytes.

The goal is to remove unnecessary size, not useful features.

---

Debug Size vs Release Size

One of the biggest mistakes developers make is measuring a debug APK.

For example:

flutter build apk --debug

A debug build contains development-related components and is not optimized like a production build.

Therefore, its size should not be used as your production benchmark.

Flutter commonly uses three build modes:

Mode	Main Purpose
Debug	Development and hot reload
Profile	Performance profiling
Release	Production deployment

For app-size analysis, you should generally work with a release build.

For example:

flutter build apk --release

This gives you a much more realistic production artifact.

---

Understanding APK, AAB, and Installed Size

Before comparing numbers, it is important to understand what you are measuring.

Android Flutter projects commonly produce either an APK or an Android App Bundle.

APK

An APK is an Android application package that can be installed directly on a compatible device.

For example:

flutter build apk --release

AAB

An Android App Bundle is primarily designed for app-store distribution.

You can generate one using:

flutter build appbundle --release

An AAB should not be treated as the exact amount every user will download.

Instead, stores such as Google Play can use the bundle to generate optimized APKs for individual devices.

Conceptually:

Android App Bundle
        ↓
Google Play
        ↓
Device Configuration
        ↓
Optimized APK
        ↓
User Device

Consequently, the AAB file sitting on your computer and the final user download are different measurements.

---

What Is --analyze-size in Flutter?

Flutter provides the --analyze-size build option for supported build workflows.

It tells Flutter to generate additional information about the compiled application’s size.

For Android, you can run:

flutter build apk --release --analyze-size

Depending on your Flutter version and build configuration, Flutter may ask you to analyze a specific architecture.

A common example is:

flutter build apk \
  --release \
  --analyze-size \
  --target-platform android-arm64

After the build completes, Flutter reports size information and generates an analysis file that can be opened in DevTools.

Use the exact output path shown by your Flutter command because generated paths can vary between versions and configurations.

---

Why Target a Specific Android Architecture?

Android devices use different CPU architectures.

Common examples include:

armeabi-v7a
arm64-v8a
x86_64

A universal APK may contain native libraries for several architectures.

For example:

Universal APK
│
├── ARM 32-bit code
├── ARM 64-bit code
└── x86_64 code

Naturally, including multiple versions increases the package size.

When performing detailed size analysis, targeting one architecture makes the report easier to understand.

For many modern Android devices, you may analyze ARM64:

flutter build apk \
  --release \
  --target-platform android-arm64 \
  --analyze-size

Now the report focuses on that architecture instead of mixing several native binary variants.

---

How to Generate a Flutter App Size Report

Start from your Flutter project directory.

First, verify that your project builds correctly.

flutter pub get

Next, create an analyzed release build:

flutter build apk \
  --release \
  --analyze-size \
  --target-platform android-arm64

Flutter will build the application and print size-related information.

More importantly, the command generates a size-analysis file.

The terminal output tells you where that file was saved.

Your workflow is now:

Flutter Project
      ↓
Release Build
      ↓
--analyze-size
      ↓
Analysis File

That file contains the detailed information DevTools needs.

---

How to Open the App Size Tool in Flutter DevTools

Once the size report is generated, open Flutter DevTools.

Navigate to the:

App Size section.

Then load the size-analysis file generated by the Flutter build command.

DevTools processes the report and displays the application structure visually.

Instead of seeing only:

My App
42 MB

you can investigate something closer to:

Application
│
├── Dart Code
├── Native Code
├── Assets
├── Fonts
├── Packages
└── Other Resources

This is where app-size analysis becomes useful.

---

Understanding the DevTools App Size Treemap

One of the most useful visualizations in the App Size tool is the treemap.

Imagine a report like this:

┌──────────────────────────────────────┐
│ Native Libraries │
│ │
├────────────────────┬─────────────────┤
│ Dart Code │ Assets │
│ │ │
├─────────┬──────────┼─────────┬───────┤
│Package A│Package B │ Images │ Fonts │
└─────────┴──────────┴─────────┴───────┘

Larger blocks represent larger contributors.

Therefore, you can quickly identify which parts deserve investigation.

For example, suppose the report shows:

Native Libraries → 20 MB
Assets → 14 MB
Dart Code → 5 MB
Fonts → 3 MB
Other → 2 MB

In this situation, spending an hour optimizing a 15 KB Dart utility class would achieve almost nothing.

Instead, investigate the native libraries and assets first.

---

Start With the Largest Unexpected Contributor

A useful optimization rule is:

Measure
   ↓
Find Largest Unexpected Component
   ↓
Investigate
   ↓
Optimize
   ↓
Measure Again

Suppose DevTools reveals:

assets/images/banner.png
→ 6.2 MB

That file immediately deserves attention.

On the other hand:

small_icon.png
→ 8 KB

is unlikely to matter.

Focus on changes that can produce meaningful improvements.

---

Analyze Image Assets

Images are one of the most common reasons Flutter apps become unnecessarily large.

Imagine your assets folder contains:

assets/images/

home_background.png 6.1 MB
onboarding_1.png 3.8 MB
onboarding_2.png 4.2 MB
profile_background.png 2.5 MB
logo.png 1.1 MB

Together, these files contribute almost:

17.7 MB

to your project assets.

That is a significant amount.

---

Resize Oversized Images

Suppose:

home_background.png

Resolution:
5000 × 5000

File size:
6 MB

However, your application never displays it anywhere near that resolution.

Keeping the original dimensions provides little benefit.

Instead, resize the asset according to the actual UI requirement.

For example:

5000 × 5000
      ↓
1600 × 1600
      ↓
Compress
      ↓
Optimized Asset

The exact target depends on your design and device-density requirements.

---

Use Efficient Image Formats

For suitable images, WebP can significantly reduce bundled asset size while preserving acceptable visual quality.

For example:

Original PNG
4.8 MB

↓

Optimized WebP
620 KB

Actual results depend on image content and compression settings.

Still, converting suitable large raster assets can produce much larger savings than optimizing small Dart files.

For photos and complex images, choose formats based on visual quality, transparency requirements, and platform support.

---

Remove Unused Assets

Suppose your project contains:

assets/images/

home.webp
profile.webp
old_home.png
old_logo.png
test_banner.png
demo_image.jpg
design_backup.png

but only:

home.webp
profile.webp

are currently used.

If the entire folder is declared:

flutter:
  assets:
    - assets/images/

unnecessary files in that bundled asset directory can increase application size.

Therefore, periodically clean production asset directories.

A good project should not use its assets folder as a backup directory.

---

Keep Design Files Outside Production Assets

Avoid structures such as:

assets/images/

final_logo.png
old_logo.png
old_logo_2.png
logo_backup.png
designer_reference.png
screenshot_home.png

Instead, keep only production resources inside the application.

For example:

assets/
├── icons/
├── images/
├── animations/
└── fonts/

Design references and backups should live elsewhere.

This simple practice can prevent accidental package growth.

---

Analyze Font Size

Custom fonts can also increase Flutter app size.

Suppose you include:

Poppins-Light.ttf
Poppins-Regular.ttf
Poppins-Medium.ttf
Poppins-SemiBold.ttf
Poppins-Bold.ttf
Poppins-ExtraBold.ttf
Poppins-Italic.ttf

However, the UI only uses:

Regular
Medium
SemiBold

In that case, several bundled files may be unnecessary.

Review your font configuration:

flutter:
  fonts:
    - family: Poppins
      fonts:
        - asset: assets/fonts/Poppins-Regular.ttf
        - asset: assets/fonts/Poppins-Medium.ttf
          weight: 500
        - asset: assets/fonts/Poppins-SemiBold.ttf
          weight: 600

Only bundle font weights and styles that your application actually needs.

---

Understand Icon Tree Shaking

Flutter can remove unused icon glyphs from supported icon fonts during optimized builds.

Suppose an icon font contains thousands of icons while your app uses only:

Home
Profile
Settings
Search
Cart

Shipping every unused glyph would waste space.

Tree shaking allows Flutter to keep only the required portions when the compiler can determine which icons are used.

Therefore, pay attention to Flutter build warnings related to icon tree shaking.

Dynamic icon construction can sometimes make optimization more difficult because the compiler may not be able to determine which glyphs are required.

---

Analyze Dart Code Size

DevTools can also show how compiled Dart code contributes to application size.

Conceptually:

Dart Code
│
├── Your Application
├── Package A
├── Package B
├── Package C
└── Generated Code

This is especially useful after adding a new feature or dependency.

For example, suppose your previous application contained:

Dart Code → 4.2 MB

After adding a feature:

Dart Code → 7.6 MB

The comparison report can help determine what contributed to that increase.

---

What Is Tree Shaking in Flutter?

Flutter release builds perform tree shaking where applicable.

Imagine a package contains:

Package
│
├── Feature A
├── Feature B
├── Feature C
└── Feature D

Your application only reaches:

Feature A

The compiler can remove unreachable Dart code when it can prove that code is unnecessary.

Conceptually:

Before Tree Shaking

A + B + C + D

After Tree Shaking

A

However, this does not mean every dependency becomes free.

A Flutter plugin may also include:

Native Android code
Native iOS code
Assets
Fonts
SDK binaries

Those components have their own size implications.

---

Analyze Third-Party Dependencies

Large Flutter projects often accumulate dependencies.

For example:

dependencies:
  firebase_core:
  firebase_auth:
  cloud_firestore:
  firebase_messaging:
  google_maps_flutter:
  image_picker:
  video_player:
  flutter_svg:
  lottie:

There is nothing inherently wrong with using these packages.

The problem appears when packages remain after their features are removed.

Review pubspec.yaml periodically.

Then ask:

Is this package still being used?

If not, remove it.

---

Inspect the Dependency Tree

Run:

flutter pub deps

This displays your project’s dependency tree.

You may see something conceptually like:

my_app
│
├── package_a
│ ├── package_b
│ └── package_c
│
└── package_d
    └── package_e

This is important because dependencies can introduce other dependencies.

These are called transitive dependencies.

You may not have added package_c directly, yet it can still become part of your dependency graph because another package requires it.

---

Native SDKs Can Significantly Increase App Size

Some Flutter plugins connect to large native Android and iOS SDKs.

Common examples involve:

• Maps
• Video processing
• Machine learning
• Camera processing
• Real-time communication
• AR
• Analytics
• Payment systems

Suppose DevTools shows a large native library:

lib/
└── arm64-v8a/
    ├── libflutter.so
    ├── libapp.so
    └── libsome_sdk.so

If:

libsome_sdk.so
→ 12 MB

then compressing a few 20 KB icons will not solve the real problem.

Instead, investigate the SDK.

Check whether:

• The SDK is still required
• Optional modules can be disabled
• A lighter configuration exists
• Unused functionality is bundled
• Another implementation better matches your requirements

However, do not replace a stable production dependency solely because it adds some size.

Functionality, security, reliability, maintenance, and development effort also matter.

---

What Is libapp.so?

In Flutter Android release builds, you may encounter:

libapp.so

This contains compiled application-related Dart code for the target architecture.

Its size can reflect reachable code from:

Your Dart code
+
Flutter framework code used by your app
+
Dart package code

If libapp.so suddenly grows after a feature change, compare reports to understand what was introduced.

---

What Is libflutter.so?

You may also see:

libflutter.so

This is associated with the Flutter engine.

Flutter applications require runtime infrastructure to render and execute the application.

Consequently, not every large file shown by the analyzer is unnecessary.

The goal should be to identify unexpected or avoidable contributors, not to remove essential Flutter components.

---

Analyze Audio and Video Assets

Media files can quickly dominate an application package.

Suppose your project contains:

intro.mp4 18 MB
tutorial.mp4 32 MB
background.mp3 10 MB
welcome.mp3 6 MB

Together:

66 MB

is bundled before considering many other application components.

If those files do not need to work offline immediately, consider remote delivery.

For example:

User Opens Content
        ↓
Request Media
        ↓
CDN / Server
        ↓
Stream or Download

Instead of:

Install Application
        ↓
Download Every Media File
        ↓
User May Never Use Most of Them

Of course, applications designed for full offline access may intentionally bundle media. In that case, the larger size is a product requirement rather than an optimization mistake.

---

Analyze Animation Assets

Flutter applications often use animation files such as:

Lottie JSON
GIF
Animated WebP
Video
Rive assets

Animations can become surprisingly large.

For example:

splash_animation.json 1.8 MB
success_animation.json 2.2 MB
welcome_animation.json 3.1 MB

Review whether all bundled animations are required.

Additionally, optimize animation assets before shipping them.

---

APK vs Split APKs

A universal APK may contain native libraries for several CPU architectures.

For example:

Universal APK

├── armeabi-v7a
├── arm64-v8a
└── x86_64

That naturally increases its total size.

Flutter can generate architecture-specific APKs:

flutter build apk --release --split-per-abi

The result may include separate APKs for different architectures.

Conceptually:

app-armeabi-v7a-release.apk

app-arm64-v8a-release.apk

app-x86_64-release.apk

Each APK contains native code appropriate for its target architecture.

Therefore, individual packages can be much smaller than one universal APK.

---

Why AAB Is Usually Better for Play Store Distribution

For Google Play distribution, Android App Bundles allow Play to deliver optimized packages.

Conceptually:

Your AAB
   ↓
Google Play
   ↓
User Device
   ↓
Required Architecture
+
Required Resources
   ↓
Optimized Delivery

As a result, a user does not necessarily receive every architecture bundled into your original project output.

This is another reason you should avoid comparing:

Universal APK size

directly with:

Play Store download size

as though they were identical.

---

Compare App Size Between Two Builds

One of the most valuable features of size analysis is comparison.

Imagine:

Version 1.4
32 MB

Version 1.5
46 MB

Something introduced:

+14 MB

Instead of searching the entire codebase manually, compare the size reports.

You might discover:

New SDK +9 MB
New Images +3 MB
New Font Family +1 MB
Other +1 MB

Now the source of the increase is clear.

---

Create a Baseline Before Optimization

Before changing anything, record the current state.

For example:

Category	Before
Native Libraries	20 MB
Assets	15 MB
Dart Code	5 MB
Fonts	3 MB
Other	2 MB
Total	45 MB

After optimization:

Category	After
Native Libraries	18 MB
Assets	7 MB
Dart Code	5 MB
Fonts	2 MB
Other	2 MB
Total	34 MB

Now you can see exactly where the reduction happened.

In this example:

45 MB
 ↓
34 MB

means approximately:

11 MB

was removed.

---

Keep Size Reports for Important Releases

For production projects, consider saving size-analysis reports for important versions.

For example:

size_reports/
│
├── v1.0
├── v1.1
├── v1.2
└── v2.0

Later, if your application suddenly grows, you have a baseline for comparison.

For example:

v1.0 → 30 MB
v1.1 → 31 MB
v1.2 → 32 MB
v1.3 → 49 MB

The increase between:

32 MB
and
49 MB

deserves investigation.

---

Common Reasons Flutter Apps Become Large

Several problems repeatedly appear in production projects.

Oversized Images

Example:

5000 × 5000 PNG

used as a small background or thumbnail.

Better approach

Resize and compress the asset.

---

Unused Assets

Old images and design files remain inside declared asset directories.

Better approach

Remove them from production assets.

---

Too Many Font Files

Several font weights are bundled even though only a few are used.

Better approach

Keep only required variants.

---

Large Native SDKs

A plugin may introduce large native binaries.

Better approach

Analyze whether the SDK and all its modules are necessary.

---

Bundled Videos

Large tutorial videos are included directly inside the application.

Better approach

If offline access is not required, consider remote delivery.

---

Bundled Audio

Offline music or voice files can add dozens or hundreds of megabytes.

Better approach

Stream or download content on demand where the product requirements allow it.

---

Old Dependencies

Packages remain in pubspec.yaml after their features are removed.

Better approach

Audit dependencies periodically.

---

Do Not Confuse App Size With Runtime Memory

Flutter DevTools contains several tools, and they solve different problems.

App Size helps investigate:

APK
AAB
Binary
Assets
Compiled Code

The Memory tooling helps investigate:

RAM
Heap
Objects
Memory growth
Leaks

These metrics are different.

For example:

App Download Size
→ 40 MB

Runtime Memory
→ 250 MB

Both numbers can be valid simultaneously.

Reducing APK size does not automatically solve memory leaks.

Likewise, reducing runtime memory does not necessarily reduce the app download size.

---

Do Not Confuse App Size With Performance

A smaller Flutter application is not automatically faster.

Consider:

App A
25 MB
Poor rendering performance

and:

App B
40 MB
Smooth rendering performance

App size mainly affects:

Download
Distribution
Storage
Installation
Updates

Runtime performance focuses more on:

CPU
GPU
Memory
Frames
Database
Network

Therefore, use the correct DevTools feature for the problem you are solving.

---

Should You Run flutter clean Before Size Analysis?

Normally, Flutter’s build system handles incremental builds correctly.

Therefore, you do not need to run:

flutter clean

before every size analysis.

However, if you recently made major native configuration changes or suspect stale build artifacts, you can use:

flutter clean
flutter pub get

Then generate the release build again.

Avoid treating flutter clean as a mandatory step for every build.

---

Practical Example: Large E-Commerce App

Imagine you are developing a Flutter e-commerce application.

The project contains:

Firebase
Payment SDK
Product images
Custom fonts
Animations
Push notifications
Analytics

Your release artifact appears larger than expected.

You generate a size report:

flutter build apk \
  --release \
  --analyze-size \
  --target-platform android-arm64

DevTools reveals:

Native Libraries → 18 MB
Images → 17 MB
Dart Code → 6 MB
Fonts → 4 MB
Animations → 3 MB
Other → 2 MB

Total:

50 MB

Instead of removing Firebase immediately, you investigate images first.

The report reveals:

home_banner.png → 5 MB
category_bg.png → 4 MB
offer_banner.png → 3 MB
old_banner.png → 2 MB
other images → 3 MB

After resizing, converting suitable images to WebP, and deleting the unused banner:

Images

17 MB
 ↓
7 MB

The app is now roughly:

40 MB

without removing any user-facing functionality.

That is exactly why app-size analysis is useful.

---

Example: Package Causes Sudden Size Increase

Suppose your previous release was:

34 MB

After adding a new feature:

46 MB

Difference:

+12 MB

You compare size reports.

The analysis reveals:

New Native SDK
+10.5 MB

Now you know the main reason for the regression.

At this point, investigate:

Is the SDK required?
        ↓
Yes
        ↓
Can optional modules be disabled?
        ↓
Can configuration be reduced?

If the feature is valuable and the SDK is necessary, the increased size may be justified.

The important point is that you can now make that decision with real data.

---

Example: Optimizing Fonts

Suppose DevTools reports:

Fonts → 6 MB

You inspect the project and discover two complete font families:

Poppins
├── Light
├── Regular
├── Medium
├── SemiBold
├── Bold
└── ExtraBold

Inter
├── Light
├── Regular
├── Medium
├── SemiBold
├── Bold
└── ExtraBold

However, your application only uses:

Poppins Regular
Poppins Medium
Poppins SemiBold

Removing unused font files can reduce the package without changing the application’s visible design.

Flutter App Size Optimization Checklist

After opening the DevTools App Size tool, check the application systematically:

1. Start with the largest treemap blocks.
2. Check large PNG, JPEG, WebP, and other bundled images.
3. Remove unused production assets.
4. Resize unnecessarily high-resolution images.
5. Compress suitable image assets.
6. Inspect bundled audio and video.
7. Review Lottie, Rive, GIF, and other animation resources.
8. Remove unused font families and weights.
9. Review pubspec.yaml dependencies.
10. Inspect transitive dependencies with flutter pub deps.
11. Investigate unexpectedly large native libraries.
12. Compare the same architecture between builds.
13. Do not compare a universal APK directly with an ABI-specific APK.
14. Understand that AAB size is not the exact user download size.
15. Generate another report after optimization.

Most importantly, change one meaningful area at a time so you can measure its effect.

Common Mistakes When Analyzing Flutter App Size

Avoid these common mistakes.

Measuring Debug APK Size

Debug builds are not representative of production builds. Use release mode for meaningful comparisons.

Looking Only at Final APK Size

The final number tells you the result but not the cause. Use DevTools to inspect the internal contributors.

Comparing Different Architectures

An ARM64 build and a universal APK are not equivalent measurements. Keep build configuration consistent.

Assuming AAB Size Equals Download Size

App stores can generate optimized device-specific packages from an AAB.

Compressing Tiny Assets First

Saving 5 KB from an icon is irrelevant when an unused video consumes 30 MB.

Removing Packages Without Analysis

A package may contribute very little after tree shaking. Measure before replacing it.

Ignoring Native Libraries

Some of the largest dependencies may come from native SDKs rather than Dart code.

Keeping Unused Files in Asset Folders

Old banners, screenshots, videos, and test files can silently increase the package.

Including Every Font Weight

Only bundle the fonts required by your design.

Never Comparing Builds

Without a baseline, it is difficult to determine when and why application size increased.

---

Best Practices for Keeping Flutter Apps Small

App-size optimization should be part of development rather than a last-minute release task.

First, keep production assets organized and remove old files regularly. Additionally, resize images before adding them to the application.

When possible, use optimized image formats and appropriately sized assets. Similarly, avoid bundling large media files when they can reasonably be delivered on demand.

Dependencies should also be reviewed periodically. Although Flutter’s compiler can remove some unused Dart code, native SDKs and bundled resources may still add substantial size.

Furthermore, compare size reports after introducing major SDKs or features. This makes sudden regressions easier to identify.

Finally, always measure again after optimization. A change that looks smaller in the source project does not necessarily produce a meaningful reduction in the final application.

Final Thoughts

Analyzing Flutter app size with DevTools gives you a clear answer to an important question:

What is actually making my Flutter application large?

Instead of guessing:

App Is Large
     ↓
Remove Random Package
     ↓
Compress Random Image
     ↓
Hope for Improvement

use a measurable process:

App Is Large
     ↓
Release Build
     ↓
--analyze-size
     ↓
DevTools App Size
     ↓
Treemap
     ↓
Find Large Contributor
     ↓
Optimize
     ↓
Compare Again

For many Flutter applications, the biggest opportunities come from:

Oversized Images
Unused Assets
Large Media Files
Unused Fonts
Native SDKs
Unnecessary Dependencies
Multiple Architecture Binaries

However, every application is different. That is exactly why measurement matters.

Flutter’s --analyze-size option and the DevTools App Size tool allow you to move beyond the simple APK or AAB file size and inspect where those bytes actually come from.

Once you identify the largest unnecessary contributors, you can reduce them without blindly removing useful functionality.

Ultimately, the best Flutter app-size strategy is simple:

build, analyze, identify, optimize, and compare.
